Happy weekend, darklings. 🖤
It's been a challenging couple of days, and I find myself thinking about Ivan Lockhart sitting at the piano in Call of Blood. He's waiting for someone to arrive any minute, and she hasn't been there in years. He's a nervous wreck, so he plays.


The piece is Ravel's Pavane pour une enfant défunte, "Elegy for a Dead Child." It was written for a French princess who was married at sixteen and died young. The composer never said so directly, but the music itself is a meditation on loss. On the space between was and might have been. On things that go away.

That's where Ivan is in that moment. Playing a song about a child who will never grow up. Playing it because someone he loved ran away, and he's waiting in the dark, hands on ivory keys, hoping somehow she comes back.

There's a special grief in that. The quiet kind. One that lives in minor keys and the space between saying goodbye and hoping to recover what you lost.
I'm sitting with that space right now.
But the weekend is coming. And sometimes the best thing we can do is what Ivan does. We sit with the music. We let it hold us for a little while.
