BMW is recalling over 100,000 vehicles in the US because the starter motors may overheat and catch fire. On Thursday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said BMW is recalling over 100,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential starter motor issue. The recall covers 14 2019 and 2020 BMW models, including the X5, X7, 3 series, and 7 series. If the starter motor fails, repeated attempts to start the vehicle could cause it to overheat and potentially start a fire. BMW will notify owners via email to come to the dealership to update the software free of charge.

Shipping companies choose ports based on efficiency and current events. let's take a quick look at the difference between hub-and-spoke network and direct service. In a hub-and-spoke network, Mainline vessels use major hubs for cargo transfer to smaller feeder vessels. About Direct Service. Ships travel directly between ports, reducing transit times and congestion. Due to the Red Sea crisis and port congestion, companies are shifting to more direct services and alternative routes like around the Cape of Good Hope.
MDS Transmodal notes significant capacity drops at ports like Jeddah, King Abdullah, and Salalah, while Port Klang, Colombo, and Tangier have seen increases. Larger gateway ports, especially in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America, have increased their deployment capacity, while hub ports have seen declines. The liner industry is shifting from hub-and-spoke networks with large ships to direct services with smaller ships (under 15,000 TEU).
This change allows for more flexible and efficient direct routes, reducing congestion at transshipment ports but increasing pressure on gateway ports. This strategy helps adapt to the Red Sea crisis. After the Red Sea crisis, shipping companies will reevaluate port calls. MSC focuses on flexibility with 62% of new ships under 12,500 TEU, while CMA, COSCO, and Evergreen are ordering larger ships over 15,000 TEU.

Based on market mechanism considerations, the world’s five major shipping lines (COSCO, MSC, CMA CGM, Evergreen, ONE)
plan to increase freight rates on the US West and US East trades by 9% to 15% effective August 15. Despite the recent correction in freight rates, the shortage of container source vessels in the peak season, the tension in the Middle East and the gradual increase in cargo volume since mid-August have contributed to the increase in freight rates; however, a weak season and the return of Panama Canal capacity will put pressure on freight rates.

Container shipping market at tipping point
In July, the global container shipping market reached a turning point, as rising spot rates began to soften while long-haul trunk rates showed signs of recovery.
The Xeneta Global XSI index, which covers all long-term contracts on the market, saw a 2.5% increase in July, reaching 151.5 points. It’s worth mentioning that the Far East Export index, which includes the world’s most important outbound routes to Europe and the US, saw a 12.6% increase to 178.8 points in July. At the same time, spot rates on major routes from the Far East to the US and Europe have started to soften.
Emily Stausboll shipping analyst at Xeneta, said that even though spot rates shot up in May and June, long-haul rates were still pretty low, but that’s starting to change. The data shows that from April 30 to July 1, the spot freight rate from the Far East to the West Coast of the USA increased by more than 140%, while the long-term association freight rate increased by only 20%. However, spot rates to the West Coast have fallen 12% since July 1. With long-term rates on the rise and spot rates on the decline, market spreads are getting tighter.
Stausboll said the maritime supply chain is still under pressure and could be disrupted at any time. The crisis in the Red Sea is still affecting the maritime supply chain. Most container ships will continue to sail around the Cape of Good Hope. There’s a risk of worker strikes at ports in the eastern United States and the Gulf Coast. Trump presidency would trigger a rush of shipments as US retailers stock up ahead of new tariffs on Chinese goods.

The container supply chain is still going strong, but demand is growing at a slower pace
In June, Hongjing’s container supply chain prosperity index was 202.39, up 1.34 points from May but basically unchanged at 5. This means the rapid upward trend has slowed down a bit. The index change shows that the container supply chain boom isn’t as strong as it could be, and market demand is growing a bit more slowly.
China’s exports are up. In June, china’s imports and exports reached 516.66 billion US dollars, up 1.9% from May. Emerging markets helped boost exports to ASEAN and Latin America, with growth of 15% and 15.7% respectively. Exports to the United States and the European Union grew by 3.0 and 5.1 percentage points respectively compared with May.
There are more empty containers at the port. The port’s empty container stock is still low, but it has rebounded. The number of new containers being taken out by shipping and leasing companies has slowed down. The number of new containers in stock is rising.
New boxes keep the industry prosperous. New orders have kept container production high. Shipping and leasing companies are ready to ship boxes, but the number of boxes shipped is still high.

Massive Tesla Recall
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that Tesla will recall more than 1.8 million electric vehicles in the United States because the software can’t detect when the hood is open, according to the report from the Dow Jones news website MarketWatch on the 30th.
The agency thinks the software flaw could cause an unlocked hood to pop open while driving and block the driver’s view, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Just to give you a heads-up, the recall affects the Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y manufactured between 2021 and 2024. In total, it affects 1849,600 vehicles.

Red Sea Crisis Peaks for Container Ships 🚢
Analysts Linerlytica said that almost all the major container shipping lines’ services have been diverted to the Cape of Good Hope. Even if the Houthi attacks keep getting worse, they won’t affect the box ship market.
It seems that only 11 of the major container line services, with 9,000 to 11,000 TEU container ships serving the BEX2 route, are still operating in the Red Sea route. “If the solution in the Red Sea gets worse, it’ll also have a limited impact on the container market, as only 14% of ships in the Asia-Europe trade currently use the Suez Canal,” Linerlytica said.
Just 72 of the 513 vessels currently operating on the Asia-Europe route still use the Suez Canal, mainly from smaller operators, according to Linerlytica.
In terms of capacity, these routes can handle a total of 7.48 million TEU, but only 4% of vessels actually transit the Suez Canal, according to analysts.
There’s been a big drop in the number of container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers and gas carriers going through the Suez Canal, which has had a pretty big impact on the Suez Canal Authority’s (SCA) revenues.
Last week, SCA reported that revenue for the fiscal year ending in April 2024 fell by $2.2 billion compared to $9.4 billion the previous year.
SCA head Osama Rabie said that the number of vessels passing through the canal in the west fiscal year dropped to 20,148 from 25,911 in the year before.
