Eddie Palmieri
Today, Fania Records mourns the loss of the legendary Eddie Palmieri, one of the most innovative and unique artists in music history.
An award-winning pianist, composer, arranger, orchestra director, and producer, Palmieri began his career in New York City in the 1950s when he was only a teenager. He would go on to form bands like La Perfecta, La Perfecta II, and Harlem River Drive. Eddie also performed in concerts and recorded with the Tico All-Stars and the internationally acclaimed Fania All-Stars.
Over the course of his seven-decade-long career, Eddie recorded for labels such as Tico, Alegre, Fania, Concord Picante, RMM and Coco Records, leaving an indelible mark on over four dozen albums, including Palo Pa' Rumba, Champagne, Unfinished Masterpiece (with vocalist Lalo Rodríguez), Sing Sing, Vámonos Pa'l Monte (considered one of the classics of his discography), and The Sun of Latin Music, the first Latin album to win a GRAMMY in 1974.
He will be greatly missed.

PALO PÁ RUMBA was released in 1984, making this its 40th anniversary, and as noted on the album cover notes, its legendary pianist, bandleader and musician, Eddie Palmieri’s first album with all Puerto Rican musicians. It’s one of Eddie’s most dance-friendly albums. It earned a GRAMMY Award in 1985 for Best Tropical Latin Performance, one of eight GRAMMYS he won throughout his extensive career. The highlight tracks include “Palo Pá Rumba,” which opens the set with a steady roar that gets stronger and ends with a bang, followed by “Bajo Con Tumbao” an exciting salsa groove with a rousing chorus and “1983” a moving song about falling in love in and with Puerto Rico in 1983.
Today, we celebrate the album’s 40th by reissuing PALO PÁ RUMBA as Remastered Digital Album, making it available in HD audio for the first time. Listen to this lively Palmieri gem today!
