It lasted because the phone did almost nothing. The screen was 4,000 pixels and stayed dark unless you pressed a key. The radio checked in with a tower every now and then. No apps, no GPS, no wifi, nothing running in the background.
Then smartphones arrived. Screens and chips started pulling way more power than a Nokia ever needed, and that's where almost all of your battery goes now.
So we didn't lose battery life. We spent it. Traded a week of standby for a computer in your pocket.
While I'd personally take that trade every time. it’s still annoying at 6pm though.
