🚨 FORGOTTEN SUNNAH: CLEANING THE PLATE AFTER A MEAL 🚨
One should completely finish the food on their plate and clean it. It is sunnah to pick up and eat any morsel that falls on the table.
As Jabir (radhiyallāhu anhu) said, “The Prophet of Allah (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) instructed us to ensure that we clean the plates completely and not leave any food behind.”
It is said that these practices are meant to prevent waste and to fully obtain the barakah of the food.
Imām Nasā’ī (rahimahullāh) stated, “The plate should not be removed from the table until all the food on it are cleaned.”
Qādhi Iyādh (rahimahullāh) also explained that the wisdom behind this hadīth al-sharīf is to avoid criticising the amount of food.
Imām Nawawī (rahimahullāh) said, “It is certain that there is barakah in the food prepared for someone to eat.
However, it is unknown whether this barakah lies in the part of the food that has been eaten, the part remaining on the plate, or the morsel that falls on the table. Therefore, it is appropriate not to leave any leftovers on the plate or the table.”
Furthermore, the ahādīth below speak on the matter:
“Whoever wipes his plate clean meticulously and does not leave any food remnants on his hands, Allah will feed him in this world and the hereafter.”
“Whoever eats from a dish and then wipes it clean thoroughly, that dish prays for forgiveness for him.”
“Indeed, Shaytān is present with any of you in all his affairs, even when you eat. If a morsel falls from one of you, let him remove any dirt and eat it and not leave it for Shaytān.”
If it is not possible to clean that part of the food mentioned in the above hadīth, it can be given to an animal rather than leaving it.
In conclusion, since Shaytān is always lurking and trying to afflict humans, believers must be vigilant and prepared, guarding against his deceptions.
Rasūlullāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) said: “For a person to show sabr and steadfastness in a row (fighting) in the way of Allāh is more virtuous in the sight of Allāh than sixty years of ibadah performed by another person.” (Hākim al-Mustadrak)
