On Monday, the Trump administration made an announcement claiming that Tylenol use in pregnancy may cause autism and ADHD.

It’s natural to feel worried when news like this crosses your feed. We’re here to help! Understood’s ecosystem research team evaluated the latest research on Tylenol, ADHD, and autism. Here’s what you need to know ⬇️

• Research on this topic is mixed — some studies found a possible link, while many found no connection (or even the opposite).

• Prior to today’s announcement, the FDA stated it had not found clear evidence that acetaminophen use in pregnancy causes ADHD, autism, or other developmental issues.

• Not taking Tylenol when it’s prescribed during pregnancy can actually be harmful for both mom and baby.

• The biggest factor in conditions like ADHD and autism? Genetics. Research shows that genes account for 60–90% of ADHD cases.

• If you’re pregnant or planning, the best thing you can do is talk with your health care provider about your specific situation.
