HEALTH UPDATE (9/9/26): Jackie’s ability to carry oxygen in her blood, already dangerously low, fell again over the weekend. On Saturday, her packed cell volume fell to 6% before nosing up to 9% today. On July 31st it was 17%.

The Ojai Raptor Center says he’s being cared for by a team of 9 veterinarians including representatives of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Update for 8/3/2026: The ‪@OjaiRaptorCenter1‬ says today's blood work for Jackie the inured eagle carried some difficult news. Her packed cell volume has dropped since their last update, which means her anemia has worsened.

The vet team responded with additional diagnostic testing, which is now underway with expedited laboratory results requested.

In the the most recent episode of Beaks, Dr. Jim Bednarz speculates that Jackie's fight, captured on film, which led to her hospitalization might be what saved her, considering her underlying medical issues.

Update (July 31): The Ojai Raptor Center reports that Jackie’s bloodwork continues to show anemia. And while her cell volume has improved, it still well below normal. She is stable but very sick with a long road ahead. They still don’t know the cause of her illness but signs indicate she was ill before the altercation with the subadults.
