EVERWAY CITY — What was supposed to be a fun and educational outing turned into a traumatic accident for a local family when their 6-year-old daughter was critically injured during a factory tour at the Everway Materials Recycling Plant.
The child, identified by her family as Tina M., was attending the tour with her parents when the incident occurred. Witnesses say Tina became curious about one of the facility’s largest machines — an object breakdown unit used to process and repurpose recyclable materials — and wandered away from the group during a demonstration.
According to officials and eyewitness accounts, the machine was being operated as part of a routine demonstration for the visitors. The operator, unaware that Tina had crawled inside the front loading area, activated the machine. Moments later, Tina’s screams rang out through the facility.
“People were shouting and crying. Her parents were frantic. It all happened so fast,” said Samantha J., a visitor who witnessed the accident. “There was blood coming out of the machine. I’ll never forget that sound.”
Emergency shut-off procedures were initiated immediately. Plant employees and first responders worked together to free the child from the machinery. She was rushed to Everway Children’s Hospital with severe injuries to her left leg.
Doctors later confirmed that Tina’s leg had been crushed beyond repair and required surgical amputation below the knee. She is currently in stable condition and under close medical supervision.
The factory has temporarily suspended all public tours while investigations are underway.
“We are heartbroken over what happened,” said a spokesperson for Everway Materials. “The safety of our guests has always been a top priority, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities to understand how such a tragedy occurred. Our thoughts and support are with the child and her family.”
Tina’s parents, while shaken, say their daughter is showing incredible resilience.
“She’s tough,” said her father. “She keeps asking if she’ll get a robot leg. We told her yes — even though it’ll take time and a lot of saving. We’ll do anything for her.”
In response to the incident, city officials and the Occupational Safety and Machinery Oversight Board (OSMOB) have launched a full investigation into the plant’s safety protocols, including how a child was able to access an active piece of equipment.
Local community members have already begun organizing support, with a fundraiser in the works to help Tina’s family cover medical bills and the cost of a prosthetic leg.
As the city reels from this tragic accident, one thing is clear — little Tina has a long road ahead of her, but she won’t be walking it alone.
