ASHANTI GJA UPDATE ON ACCIDENT VICTIMS: Media Safety and Security Alert

The Ashanti regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) wishes to update our members and the general public on the condition of colleagues who were involved in the recent accident while covering an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assignment on illegal mining activities on Thursday 6th November, 2025 at Afari near Nkawie.

We are pleased to report that all but ONE of our colleagues, have been discharged and are recovering steadily.
Ibrahim Abubakar (TV3/Akoma FM), Doris Lonta (Channel 1 TV), Nana Yaw Gyimah (Luv FM/JoyNews), and Joseph Obeng (Nhyira FM/Adom News) are doing well.

Our colleague, Akwasi Adomako, a Camera Technician with JoyNews, underwent a successful surgery on his right thigh on Saturday 9th November and is currently in recovery at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. We continue to wish him a speedy and full recovery.

The GJA expresses profound appreciation to journalists across the country, members of the public, and particularly the EPA, for their solidarity, care, and cooperation during this challenging period.

As we collectively pursue environmental protection and public interest journalism, we must also prioritize our own safety and security in the line of duty. Covering illegal mining (galamsey) operations poses significant risks. Our field monitoring confirms that many of these sites in the Ashanti Region are volatile, with illegal miners often armed and prone to violence against anyone perceived as a threat to their activities.

We therefore urge journalists to always assess and clarify the level of risk before undertaking such assignments, including those in collaboration with anti-galamsey taskforces. It is imperative that adequate security and safety measures are guaranteed before venturing into high-risk zones.

Let us remain vigilant. Let us demand protection. And above all, let us stay alive to continue telling the stories that matter.

Daddy Lumba gave us instructions on how to bury him and manage his properties before he died, so make steady for there — Late singer’s family warns Akosua Serwah

The family of late Highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has issued a firm warning to all individuals, especially his estranged wife Akosua Serwah, to refrain from making claims or attempting to take possession of any of the musician’s properties.

The Fosu Royal Family of Parkoso and Nsuta revealed that Daddy Lumba had left behind specific instructions on how his funeral should be conducted and how his estate should be handled before his passing in a new statement released through their solicitors.

According to the statement, “All his properties form part of his estate which the family, together with the children and their mothers, shall work together to ensure fair distribution to all who are entitled to benefit.”

The family further cautioned that no individual has the right to unilaterally access, sell, or occupy any of the late singer’s assets until the estate has been legally administered.

They added that their focus is on respecting Daddy Lumba’s wishes and ensuring a dignified funeral in accordance with his directives.

“To avoid any unproductive litigation among the family and children that may result in shame for the dead, the Fosu family is open to peaceful discussions… but until then, let all persons stay away from the properties,” the statement read.

The caution follows claims reportedly made by Akosua Serwah, who is based in Germany, regarding her entitlement to Daddy Lumba’s estate and funeral arrangements.

The Fosu Royal Family, however, stated that Akosua Serwah deserted the musician more than a decade ago when he fell ill and later presented drinks in line with Akan custom to formally end the marriage.

In contrast, the family affirmed that Priscilla Ofori, popularly known as Odo Broni, who lived with the musician during his later years and cared for him until his death, is recognized as his legitimate wife.

“It is our clear instruction to state that Odo Broni is a recognized wife of the late Daddy Lumba and same is recognized by the Fosu Royal Family,” the statement concluded.

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, paid a working visit to the Ministry of Education. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who served as Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017, was warmly welcomed by the current Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, alongside the Deputy Minister Dr Clement Apaak, Technical Advisor, Chief Director, Heads of Agencies, Directors, and Project Coordinators of the Ministry.

In his welcome remarks, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu described the Vice President as “an unquestioned champion of education in Ghana.” He highlighted the outstanding work of the agencies under the Ministry and outlined key initiatives such as the No Fees Stress policy, free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, and the ongoing transformation in STEM education and TVET. The Minister also appealed for the sustainability of the No Fees Stress policy, while assuring that the Ministry remains committed to supporting government’s broader education agenda.

The Vice President, in her remarks, commended the Ministry for its efforts, noting that she had no doubt that every staff member was working to bring out the best in learners. She assured of the operationalisation of new universities, with a focus on diversifying their thematic areas to meet the needs of Ghana’s development.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also urged parents and guardians to guide learners against indiscipline on school campuses. She further encouraged staff of the Ministry and its agencies to overcome challenges by working together, collapsing silos, and sharing expertise for greater impact.

The Ministry of Education appreciates the Vice President’s visit and her commitment to advancing education for all Ghanaians.

The Dagger.

The Bantama stool was created for war/defense, so unlike most Akan/Asante inheritance practices(matrilineal), it is patrilineal.
The occupant is therefore the chief warrior of Asante.
There was a Bantama chief who was pushing for a pre-emptive attack on an enemy but the king never gave the green light, hard as he pushed.
Out of frustration, he attempted assassinating the king,but his move was foiled.
Ever since then, all Bantama chiefs are disarmed before meeting the Asantehene (even though it’s more symbolic now)

Secondly, the Asantehene was given the dagger, maybe as a last defense provision,to carry in his cloth. Again,in this era,it just could be symbolic.
