With all the flamboyant music videos, how many people do you think live below the poverty line in Nigeria - under $2 daily?

Speaking of poverty, can anyone hit rock bottom?

I just spoke with a potential interviewee who is comfortable granting an audio interview of their journey through poverty. They feel passionately about this but cannot face a camera. Why? Because poverty shaming has been normalized, while the weaponizers of poverty live freely.

Why are people from poverty often ashamed to speak up? Because poverty shaming is real. I know a girl from the projects who would often hide her poor background when in a public group. I know another who denies ever being poor. Yet poverty is forever around us. If we don’t identify the problem, how do we fix it?

I’m from poverty, and while I’m here, in my hometown, the least I can do is try to fix things.

In many cases, poverty is probably not your fault. It is a weapon often wielded by unseen hands.

Hi, I’m Stephen Nwaloziri.

Weaponized Poverty is a growing problem in Nigeria, and on the African Continent.

I’m here to tackle it.

This episode is an introduction to a short series on Weaponized Poverty in Nigeria.

In subsequent episodes, we will examine 10 instruments of weaponized poverty which are:

1. Slave Wages
2. Elitism & classism
3. Exclusion
4. The government
5. The people
6. Money
7. Gentrification
8. Distractions
9. Stockholm syndrome
and…

Socio-economic stagnation

I recognize that while some families struggle to earn N50,000 monthly, an equivalent of $30 in 2025, there are some families that earn a million naira daily.

If you live in Nigeria & none of these is your reality, then congratulations.

For those of us that are highly under-represented, this is our story.
