Most people think Americans just “drop” the final Ts or Ds in their words. That idea sounds convenient. It is also wrong.
What actually happens is more interesting. Final Ts and Ds can turn into six different sounds, and they are never written differently. You only hear them. Or you miss them.
These are the six outcomes you’re listening for:
/t/ /t⌝/ /ʔ/ /d/ /t̬/ /d⌝/
Before you try to say them, you have to train your ear.
Can you hear when more air explodes versus less air?
Can you hear where the tongue changes position and reshapes the airflow?
If you cannot hear the difference, your mouth has no chance of choosing correctly.

There are 3 different ways to say the 'Merry' in 'Merry Christmas' but most people aren't getting ANY right! (spoiler- all 3 are correct)
'Merry' 'Mary' and 'marry' are 3 words of what we call a merger. And there are 3 different vowel sounds you could use, which are all correct!
