On the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri, we bring you a little-known fact about Lord Shiva.
Did you know? Shiva's third eye, which is normally closed, is said to have the combined energy of his left and right eyes. It has the immense power to sense without the use of hearing, sight, touch, taste or smell. With his eyes, Shiva can not only look into the past, present and future but can also look at the entire universe.

In honour of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Amar Chitra Katha brings you the stories of inspirational women who broke societal barriers to achieve their dreams.
Anandibai Joshi was a bright and curious child. She was married, at the age of nine, to a progressive husband who began educating her. When she lost a baby at the age of 14, due to lack of medical attention, Anandibai decided that no other woman would suffer as she had. She was determined to study medicine and become a doctor at a time when women were only allowed to become midwives and nurses. Her journey was full of obstacles like financial struggles and lack of support from the community and her family, but she rose above every difficulty. She became the first woman to leave India and study abroad. When she finally completed her degree from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, she opened the doors for all Indian women who wished to study the sciences.

Kamala Sohonie grew up in a family of distinguished scientists. She completed her B.Sc in chemistry and physics, topping Bombay University when she graduated. However, when she applied for a research fellowship at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), she was rejected solely on the basis of her gender. Not one to give up, she sat outside the Director C.V. Raman's office until he relented and admitted her. She was put on probation and only allowed to work at night, but Kamala Sohonie never gave up. She completed her M.Sc and then went on to study at Cambridge, where she discovered cytochrome C, which helps plants respirate. This discovery helped her make history by becoming the first Indian woman to be awarded a PhD.

Married at 15 years, widowed and single mother to a four-month-old at 18 years, A. Lalitha's journey was full of obstacles from the very beginning. However, her will proved stronger than her circumstances. She obtained special permission to take admission in the College of Engineering, Guindy, becoming the only woman in the all-male campus. In 1943, A. Lalitha made history by becoming the first woman engineer in the country! She went on to work on projects like the Bhakra Nangal Dam and was also the only Indian at the First International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists (ICWES) in New York.

Godrej and Boyce opened its first overseas plant in 1967 in Malaysia. While this was a triumph in its own right, the plant was unique for another reason. Here, women were employed across all positions - driving trucks, working the machines, delivering products and much more. At a time when women were rarely employed on the shop floor, this was a feather in the Godrej cap.
