It’s that time of year and I’m so excited! 🤩
Registration for Illustration from Imagination (IFI) is officially open! 🎉
What is IFI?
IFI is an 8-week mentorship program designed to feel like a game. You’ll be “hired” by a fictional company to create promotional artwork for a film. Choose one of ten projects and let the adventure begin!
Each week, you unlock new foundational skills like composition, color theory, light, anatomy, and more to help you complete your project.
The result? A finished illustration created entirely from your imagination that you can be proud of.

I start with a character description, then pull together a moodboard with references. My reference photos aren’t always conventional, I used a flamingo for the coat on this character. 😄
Once my moodboard is full, I piece the character together, taking inspiration from all those different references.
I’ll be showing you my character design process during the One Week Character Challenge, and you can try this method too! We start on March 10th, so don’t miss the registration. 👉 pntbl.cc/oneweekcharacter

Everybody wears make-up!
At least in my art. 😄
This is my secret to avoiding dull, lifeless skin. Right after my flat colors, I add blush on the cheeks (and paint the nose and ears red too). Most of it gets covered by the end, unless the character is actually wearing makeup, but this step helps me add add enough color so I don’t end up with ghost-like skin. 👻
I go over my whole skin-painting process in my Skin Tone Secrets FREE mini class on Instagram. Grab the brushet and go over to the Paintable Instagram to get access to the exclusive content: pntbl.cc/daily5

What are details? 🤔
Back in the day, I used to grab my smallest brush, zoom in, and spend a loooong time adding tiny details. But I don’t do that anymore because it’s time-consuming, and nobody’s going to zoom in and appreciate those details. 🤷♂️
Now, for me, details are more about the edges between light and shadow. I keep the hard edges and add a few lines to stylize them. It’s quicker, it’s fun, and I really like how it looks. ☺️
But details should be the finishing touch. What really makes the difference is what's underneath: colors, light, and shadow. I’ll show you how I paint these in my free Skin Tone Secrets mini class on the Paintable Instagram.

✨ Want to paint metal on a complex object? ✨
Here’s how:
1️⃣ Start with flat base colors
2️⃣ Focus on the overall light first
3️⃣ Add shadows: both form shadows and cast shadows
4️⃣ Then go smaller—add highlights and fine details to the focal points
Feeling adventurous? Throw in a colored light source for extra flair! 😀

Small effort ⏩ Big reward!
I'm always amazed at how much a secondary light source can transform a portrait. It doesn’t take much effort, but the difference is huge! It adds depth, dimension, and, if you’re using colored light, it can completely change the mood too. 💡
I break down exactly how I paint light on portraits in my Skin Tone Secrets mini-class on the Paintable Instagram.
