Today is Naagpanchami. So on this occasion, let's know something about Sheshnaag, the greatest devotee of Shri Vishnu.

Sheshnaag was born to the sage Kashyapa and his wife Kadru. Devi Kadru was the mother of the Nagas (serpents). According to many texts, she gave birth to thousands of serpent sons. Among them, Sheshnaag was the eldest and the noblest. His brothers included famous Nagas such as Vasuki and Takshaka. According to the Mahabharata (Adi Parva) and later Puranic traditions, Sheshnaag left his family because he could not tolerate their unrighteous conduct.

His mother Devu Kadru deceived her sister and co-wife, Devi Vinata, in a dispute about the celestial horse Uccaihshravas. Devi Kadru ordered her serpent sons to help her cheat by clinging to the horse's tail so it would appear black instead of the usual white colour. Many of the Nagas refused because they knew it was wrong. Being enraged, Devi Kadru cursed those sons to perish in King Janamejaya's future snake sacrifice. Sheshnaag was deeply disturbed, not only by this incident but by the constant jealousy, hatred, and dishonesty among his family. He did not wish to live among those who delighted in wrongdoing. Rather than argument or seeking revenge, he chose a different path. He left his mother, brothers, and home, renounced worldly attachments, and went into severe penance. He wandered through sacred places, living on air alone and meditating for a very long time. His only desire was that his mind should never turn away from righteousness (dharma). His austerities became so intense that they pleased Prajapati Brahma. He himself appeared before Sheshnaag and said that he was pleased with his purity and asked him to request a boon.

Sheshnaag did not ask for wealth, power, or even liberation. Instead, he said that his only wish was that his mind should always remain established in dharma and never be attracted to evil. Prajapati Brahma was deeply pleased by such a selfless request. He gave Sheshnaag two great responsibilities...

1) To support the Earth with his immense strength, ensuring its stability.

2) To become the eternal companion and couch of Vishnu.

According to Vaishnava scriptures, Ananta Sheshnaag is the embodiment of perfect devotion and selfless service. Whenever Vishnu descends to the world, Sheshnaag also descends, not because Vishnu needs his help, but because his eternal joy is to remain with Him and serve Him in every possible way. His role changes according to the form that Vishnu takes, but one thing never changes, he is always the closest companion and greatest servant of the Lord. According to the major Hindu traditions, the most widely accepted incarnations of Ananta Shesha are...

1. Lakshman (Treta Yuga)
2. Balaram (Dvapara Yuga)
3. Nityananda Prabhu (Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition)

As Lakshmana, he became Shri Ram's younger brother. He protected him throughout exile, remained awake while he slept, built shelters, guarded Mata Sita and Shri Ram, fought mighty warriors like Indrajit, and dedicated his entire life to Shri Ram's service.

As Balaram, he became the elder brother of Shri Krishna. In this incarnation, he protected him during childhood, guided him, and supported his divine mission.

In the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, Nityananda is considered the incarnation of Balarama and therefore an expansion of Ananta Shesha. In this form, his role was to assist Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in spreading the path of devotion and the chanting of the divine name. Shri Nityananda served through compassion, forgiveness, and uplifting fallen souls. He approached people with unconditional love, even those who had committed mistakes, and dedicated his entire life to spreading Krishna devotion. He travelled among people, gave spiritual guidance, forgave even those who opposed him, and brought fallen souls toward devotion. His role reflected Sheshnaag's eternal nature: to support the divine mission, serve the Lord's purpose, and become a source of strength and mercy for others.

The Life of Sheshnaag teaches us some of the deepest lessons about love, humility, and selfless service. His life is not about seeking power or recognition, but about finding fulfillment in serving the divine.

1. True devotion means selfless service: Sheshnaag does not serve Shri Vishnu because he expects a reward. His happiness comes from simply being near the Lord and fulfilling whatever role is needed. Whether as the cosmic serpent supporting Vishnu or as Lakshman serving Shri Ram, he shows that true love expresses itself through service.

2. Choose righteousness even when it is difficult: Sheshnaag left his own family because he could not accept their wrongful actions. His decision teaches that one should not follow adharma just because it is done by one's own people. Loyalty to truth and righteousness is greater than attachment.

3. Humility is greater than power: Sheshnaag is described as immensely powerful, capable of supporting the universe, yet he chooses the position of a servant. He does not seek a throne or glory. This teaches that greatness is not measured by authority but by humility.

4. Stand beside those you love during hardship: As Lakshman, Sheshnaag did not only share Shri Ram's happiness; he shared his suffering. He left the comforts of Ayodhya, lived in the forest, faced dangers, and protected Shri Ram and Mata Sita. His devotion teaches that true love remains present during difficult times.

5. Serve according to the need of the moment: Sheshnaag's forms show that service does not always look the same. As Lakshman, he was a younger brother and protector. As Balaram, he was an elder brother and guide. As Ananta Shesha, he was the eternal support of Shri Vishnu. The lesson is that devotion requires flexibility and dedication, not just a fixed role.

6. Control ego and anger: Even though Sheshnaag was born among the Nagas, he did not allow the negativity around him to shape his nature. Through penance and discipline, he purified himself. His story teaches that our choices define us more than our circumstances.

The greatest lesson from Sheshnaag's devotion is this:

"The highest form of love is not asking, 'What will I receive?' but asking, 'How can I serve?'"

That is why Sheshnaag is remembered not only as the eternal companion of Shri Vishnu but also as the symbol of the ideal devotee, one who remains beside the Lord through every form, every age, and every situation. Thus it can be concluded that when Shri Vishnu represents the Supreme Reality, Sheshnaag represents perfect devotion and selfless service. Sheshnaag never seeks recognition, power, or glory for himself. His joy lies entirely in serving Shri Vishnu in whatever form is needed. That is why we often see him as the highest example of humility, loyalty, and unwavering dedication. His relationship with Shri Vishnu is therefore not one of dependence but of eternal companionship and loving service, making him one of the most revered figures in Hindu tradition.
