Calculated Column vs Measure in Power BI
If you're learning Power BI or working on real-time dashboards, understanding the difference between Calculated Columns and Measures is a game-changer.
Let’s break it down in a simple way 👇
🔹 Calculated Column
* Created at the time of data load or refresh
* Stored in the data model (consumes memory)
* Works on Row Context (calculated for each row)
* Adds a new column to your table
* Useful for fixed, pre-calculated values
* Can increase model size and impact performance
Examples: Profit per row, Category mapping, Flags
🔹 Measure
* Calculated dynamically during report usage
* Not stored → calculated on the fly
* Works on Filter Context (changes with slicers/filters)
* Used for aggregations (SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, etc.)
* Optimized for performance (doesn’t increase model size)
Examples: Total Sales, Average Revenue, Dynamic KPIs
