Why Did Archbishop Lefebvre Dedicate his Society to Pope Pius X?
Dear Friends: Archbishop Lefebvre was a Council Father at the Second Vatican Council. In 1987 – the year before he defied the Vatican by consecrating bishops without papal mandate – he wrote a book titled “They Have Uncrowned Him” on the subversion of orthodoxy by Vatican II.
Far from a reckless renegade, this personal friend of Pope Pius XII and head of the Holy Ghost Fathers was absolutely convinced that his beloved Church was suffering a state of emergency whose roots had been exposed 80 years earlier by Pope Pius X in PASCENDI DOMINICI GREGIS, ON THE DOCTRINES OF THE MODERNISTS.
On September 8, 1907, the greatest pope of the Twentieth Century promulgated the most prophetic encyclical of the Twentieth Century, urgently warning against what he called the “synthesis of all heresies” which, if left unchecked, would destroy the human element of the Catholic Church.
Three years later, in 1910, he mandated every Catholic priest take the Oath Against Modernism. The prophet-pope was attempting to kill the coming new world order in its cradle.
If you want to understand what has happened to the Catholic Church today, you need only read Pascendi. Let me give you just the second paragraph of Pascendi:
“That We make no delay in this matter is rendered necessary especially by the fact that the partisans of error are to be sought not only among the Church's open enemies; they lie hid… in her very bosom and heart... We allude, Venerable Brethren, to . . . Catholic laity…and the ranks of the priesthood itself, who, feigning a love for the Church….[and] thoroughly imbued with the poisonous doctrines taught by the enemies of the Church… vaunt themselves as reformers of the Church and … assail all that is most sacred in the work of Christ, not sparing even the person of the Divine Redeemer, whom… they reduce to a simple, mere man.”
I’m just old enough to remember when those same "reformers" went ahead and "reformed" the entire Roman Rite. As Pius had predicted, Catholic churches have been closing ever since.

And why is the Vatican at war with the Society of Saint Pius X? Because the Vatican is teeming with Modernists who are still battling the spirit of the one bishop at Vatican II who'd called them out for uncrowning Christ the King.
The war goes on, in other words, and we are all at the heart of it. St. Pius X famously said that the “true friends of the people are neither the innovators nor the revolutionaries, but the traditionalists.” That's you, that's all of us. So, in the spirit of St. Pius X, let's resist these 'partisans of error' to their faces.
Dear Friends: If you’re a practicing Catholic, I have a question for you: Do you believe in Angels? Serious question. Do you honestly believe that you have a guardian angel?
In my new Underground, I get back to basics, because I earnestly want to know if Catholics still believe what Catholics have always believed. Do we believe, for example, that Jesus Christ instituted Seven Sacraments that are necessary for salvation?
The reason I ask is because the Modernist revolution inside the Catholic Church has been chipping away at these basic Catholic beliefs all our lives. And I want to know how many of us have held on.
Dolly Parton died this week. May God be merciful to her. She wasn’t Catholic. But when she died, many Catholics took to social media to share their opinion that she went straight heaven. And for this reason, Dolly’s passing shines light on how successful the Revolution has been. Because if Dolly went straight to heaven – as Father James Martin and his America Magazine said she did – then how important are the Seven Sacraments anymore? Dolly never went to Confession. She never received Our Lord in Holy Communion. Did not even have benefit of the Last Rites or a Requiem.
So, the question asks itself: If non-Catholics don’t need the Sacraments to be saved, how important can they be? And if salvation outside of the Catholic Church is now guaranteed to all nice people who die, how important can the Catholic Church be anymore?
This is not about Dolly Parton. This is about us. It’s not Dolly’s fault that the post-Vatican II popes have been sounding an uncertain trumpet for decades. It’s not her fault that Catholic priests don’t talk about the four last things very much at all anymore. It’s not her fault that from Pope Francis’s infamous “who am I to judge,” to his “all religions are pathways to God,” to Pope Leo’s recent admonition that we not cling to “religious certainties” – the world has gotten the message – everyone’s saved and, if Hell exists, nobody’s in it!

Dear Friends: In this RTV Short, I comment on what the Vatican is really doing with respect to the Society of St. Pius X. HINT: "The issue is never the issue. The issue is always the Revolution."
This maxim -- which originated among 1960s radical Marxist groups -- can be applied to the Vatican's grievances against the SSPX, which are not the true end goal, but rather tools used by these promoters of the New Order to permanently overturn the old Catholic order.
In fact, it could even be said that here the Vatican is taking a page out of Saul Alinsky's tactical philosophy manual, "Rules for Radicals."
Still, while good men will come down on both sides of the SSPX controversy, it is obvious that the Vatican's end game is not to save souls from the mortal sin of schism but rather to promote the Modernist Revolution by excommunicating those defending 2000 years of Catholic Tradition.
It's the SSPX today, and the rest of us tomorrow. How do I know? Because the issue is never the issue. The issue is always the Revolution!
Bishop Eleganti, the SSPX, and the Circular Firing Squad
Dear Friends: I am back from a successful mission trip to Tanzania. We summited Mount Kilimanjaro, and our expedition was accompanied by two missionary priests of the Holy Cross who celebrated the Latin Mass every day, all the way to the top of the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
Nearly $100 thousand was raised and the future of the Latin Mass movement in Tanzania seems bright indeed. And for me personally it was a pleasant relief to step away from the civil wars over the SSPX consecrations, which seem much more intense here in the States than in Tanzania.
Honestly, with the coming economic collapse, the political meltdown, and the AI revolution against God and Man, I cannot imagine why anyone would be wasting time bickering over the SSPX. In fact, let me offer one example of how to avoid the circular firing squad altogether.
Last year, I invited His Excellency Bishop Marian Eleganti to speak at the CIC. I ran into him on the Borgo Pio in Rome and was delighted to make his acquaintance. We agreed on many important issues, and I ended up inviting him to speak at the CIC.
His Excellency hesitated, since he had not learned to celebrate the Latin Mass, even though he’s sympathetic to our cause. In the interest of building a coalition against Synodality and other leaky lifeboats, I insisted and His Excellency was gracious enough to join us at the CIC the following October. His talk went over very well, and I’m happy to consider him a friend to this day. Do we agree on everything? Of course not! And here’s where I’d like to use him as an example of the sad reality we all face right now.
Bishop Eleganti is my friend, but he is the very last person I would expect to offer public agreement with the SSPX consecrations. In fact, I can’t imagine why anyone would expect him to. Bishop Eleganti is retired. He fought the good fight wherever he could, and finally incurred the wrath of the late Pope Francis.
Nevertheless, the issue with the SSPX is not the SSPX itself. The issue is the Revolution. One’s understanding of the true nature of the plot to undermine Christ’s Church through Modernist infiltration will determine one’s understanding of the SSPX consecrations themselves.
In other words, if you don’t accept that the Church today is in the most detrimental state of emergency since the Arian Hersey, it’s likely you will not understand why the SSPX acted as they did.
If a bishop went his entire career without even developing enough of an understanding of the crisis in the Church to recognize the Novus Ordo Mass as the touchstone of the Revolution, of course, he’s not going to agree with the SSPX.
Through no fault of his own, Bishop Eleganti lacks a profound enough appreciation of the crisis. He’s still offering the New Mass, even in retirement.
And I say this with all the respect in the world for my friend Bishop Eleganti. It is not his fault. It’s just the reality. I need not condemn him. In fact, from what I know of him already, it’s only a matter of time before he’ll begin to see – just as Bishop Athanasius Schneider sees – that “if the Holy See were to take the position of the SSPX seriously, it would mark the beginning of the end of the Modernist project within the Church.” (Bishop A. Now, extrapolate that to your friends, your family, and all the good folks who only joined the Latin Mass movement during Covid. Of course, they do not have the same understanding of the crisis in the Church which the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre dedicated his life to opposing. Of course, they are going to balk at the consecrations.
And of course, those of us who have been in this fight for decades need not take their remonstrations too terribly seriously. We “been there done that” forty years ago.
For sixty years, the Catholic Faith has been watered down by the Modernist occupiers of the Catholic Church to such an extent that, today, most Catholics do not even know what it means to be Catholic. Again, through no fault of their own. THAT is the crisis in the Catholic Church, in fact!
If they lack Catholic formation to that extent, it is highly unlikely that they will fully understand the truly diabolical nature of the state of emergency in the Catholic Church today.
So, what do we do? Don’t let them play us against each other. We also need a meeting of the clans, in person, and sooner than later. In God’s Providence, that meeting will happen in October in Pittsburgh.
In this week’s video, I explain why the Catholic Identity Conference 2026 is more important than ever before. No matter where you come down on the SSPX, the Revolution is the problem – not the SSPX. If you do not understand why the SSPX did what they did, fine! Just move along and let the circular firing squad fire their pop guns without you.
Don’t let the Cardinals Tucho, Roche, and Cupich blow us apart. Hold the Catholic ground and let the Vatican wonder what you think about their condemnation of our brothers in the SSPX.
Let them think that maybe – just maybe – if they keep trying to cancel the Latin Mass, you might join the migration into the SSPX catacomb until the Vatican returns to its Catholic senses. Let them wonder what you’ll do next because traditionalists being unpredictable in this regard will help keep the Tradition-phobic Vatican off balance, and that's good.

Dear Friends: What’s the more strategic approach where Bishop Thomas Paprocki is concerned – to focus solely on the low-hanging fruit (his likening of the SSPX to a Protestant sect), or to highlight His Excellency’s inadvertent acknowledgment of the very same state of emergency which motivated the SSPX to consecrate bishops without papal mandate in the first place?
That’s the subject of this week’s Remnant Underground: “PAPROCKI v. SSPX: The Price of 'Full Communion' in the Synodal Church”
Even if you disagree with the SSPX, the truth is they've exposed the rank hypocrisy of the Synodal Church which evidently has little interest in listening to the sheep unless, of course, the sheep are regurgitating Synodal wokeness, in which case the Vatican is all ears.
Bishop Paprocki is a canon lawyer. He knows the law. And since the 1983 Code of Canon Law is heavily imbued with the spirit of Modernism, he also knows that it suffers from a lack of objectivity. The Code’s provisions for acting against the law during a state of emergency, for instance, are entirely too subjective.
Italian canon lawyer and legal scholar, Count Neri Capponi, defended Archbishop Lefebvre against the charge of “schism": “You cannot apply the ‘standards’ of the new code of canon law and the ‘mentality’ of the old code. According to the new code, Lefebvre could do what he did with a Catholic intention, and he did what he did in ‘sincerity’ and invoked the ‘state of emergency’ argument, which the new code permits. You might not like the new code, but it’s what governs the Church.” (The Latin Mass Magazine, 1990)
Exactly! And on July 1, 2026, the sons of Archbishop Lefebvre acted in the same way. With “Catholic intention” and “sincerity”, they invoked the “state of emergency argument which the new code permits.” And so, it is up to us to decide whether there is, in fact, a state of emergency which warrants such extraordinary measures.
Cardinal Burke says, no, there is no state of emergency. And that is his opinion, but it certainly does not settle the matter. Archbishop Vigano is so convinced that there is an unprecedented emergency in the Church today that he was "excommunicated" for his efforts to expose it. But this is not the end of the matter, either.
I have interviewed Bishop Athanasius Schneider many times, and it is his opinion that we are indeed in a state of emergency. Bishop Joseph Strickland concurs. But, still, due to the subjectivity of the canon in question, the matter remains unsettled.
Who gets to decide when there is a state of emergency? Count Capponi held that the state of emergency today is worse than Arianism and for the following four reasons:
1) The principal vehicle of the faith, the liturgy, was untouched by the Arian crisis; 2) Whereas the Arian crisis was precipitated and sustained by the intervention of secular power, the post Vatican II crisis comes from within the Church and is therefore more difficult to fight; 3) In the fourth century, Pope Liberius finally signed the excommunication of St. Athanasius under duress—in the twentieth century Pope Paul VI was admittedly taken in and hoodwinked by his misguided optimism, but there was no duress; 4) The present crisis is not only one of faith but of morals as well. In addition, today not only one dogma, albeit a very important one, is denied as with Arianism, but all dogmas, be it even the existence of a personal God!
No state of emergency? Seriously!?
Bishop Paprocki does not agree that there is a state of emergency, at least not in so many words. His actions, on the other hand, seem to suggest otherwise. He is one of a handful of bishops who provides no LGBT “outreach” in his diocese, he promotes the Latin Mass, and he rejects the very notion that Protestantism is just another pathway to God (as Pope Francis said it was).
Bishop Paprocki says the very existence of Protestantism is a “scandal” and that all Protestant denominations need to return to the Catholic Church, thus putting himself at odds with the Synodal Church. In fact, Bishop Paprocki’s orthodoxy drags him much closer to the bishops of the SSPX than Cardinals Cupich, Radcliffe, and McElroy.
So, where does Bishop Paprocki go from here, now that he too finds it impossible to obey the Homo-Synodal Church of Synodality? In my new Underground, I encourage him to take his positions to their logical conclusion – because he, not unlike the SSPX, is in fact reacting to the state of emergency.
Considered in this light, the SSPX is not the issue. As every good Marxist knows, the issue is NEVER the issue. The issue is ALWAYS the Revolution.
This week’s Underground raises arguments against the Revolution that I believe will resonate with sincere Catholics everywhere, whether or not they agree with the SSPX’s response to the Revolution.
Bottom line: The Revolution is coming after all faithful Catholics . . . including, ultimately, Bishop Paprocki – the SSPX just got in the way.
Throwing the SSPX under the bus, therefore, is not going to save any of us – including Bishop Paprocki.
Dear Friends: To borrow from Mr. Paine, these are the times that try men’s souls. The crisis within the human element of the Catholic Church is beyond trying, it's soul-crushing. But as bad as things are, there are precedents.
At the moment, the Society of St. Pius X feel obliged in conscience to go against the will of the Pope in Rome. This causes understandable concern for many people, especially those who may not fully appreciate the diabolical nature of the Modernist Revolution that has been tearing the Church apart for more than a century.
In anticipation of this, Our Lord Himself set the precedent for what the scattered sheep must do when the shepherd is struck. In Luke 22, Jesus says to Peter: “But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.” And Peter said unto him, “Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.” And Jesus said, “I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.”
This was before Pentecost, yes, but a foreboding precedent nevertheless! And so, today, we too pray that Peter’s faith will not fail him and that, if it does, we will not be scandalized.
Where was Peter at the foot of the Cross? Exactly! Which apostle denied even knowing Jesus? Exactly!
History is filled with popes who fell short – from Peter to Liberius, from John XXII to Honorius, from Paul VI to Francis. Since the Revolution of Vatican II, the Holy See has been occupied by disoriented popes who have embraced semi-Modernist propositions, not unlike Pope Liberius of the 4th century who, under duress, embraced Semi-Arian propositions. Before it was over, Pope Liberius had signed the decree of excommunication of the great St. Athanasius.
Saint Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, honorably resisted Pope Liberius to his face. He did not crown himself pope nor start his own Church. He prayed for Peter and then resisted him to his face in filial charity. In the name of safeguarding the Faith – even against a disoriented pope – Saint Athanasius stood virtually alone against the world.
For his part, Pope Liberius (the first pope not canonized) eventually recanted his errors and died in the good graces of the Church in the year 366. Ten centuries later, Pope John XXII recanted his heresy as well and also died in the good graces of the Church. In both cases, it was the laity who resisted the popes and finally prevailed on good bishops (such as St. Athanasius) to lead their resistance, thus helping to preserve the Faith.
In our time, the Society of St. Pius X finds itself in a similar dilemma, caught between the rock of obedience and the hard place of the first law of the Church which is to preserve the Faith. Theologians and historians have been debating similar upheavals in the Church ever since St. Paul resisted Peter to his face in Antioch in the 1st century (Galatians 2).
We are not going to settle this controversy overnight, and as it was in the past, good men will come down on both sides of it. The harsh reality today is that not Arianism but the smoke of Modernism – which Pope St. Pius X defined as the “synthesis of all heresies” – has “entered the temple of God” as if through “some fissure” . . . the “fissure” being the spirit of Vatican II.
To usher in their New Order, the post-conciliar Vatican established a regime of novelty, complete with a New Evangelization, New Liturgical Calander, New Code of Canon Law, New Rosary, New Catechism, and a whole New Order of Mass to replace the Traditional Latin Mass codified by Pope Saint Pius V in 1570 via his papal bull, Quo Primum, which granted all priests the perpetual right to celebrate the old Latin Mass.
The modern popes scrapped both Quo Primum and Pope Pius X’s famous “Oath Against Modernism,” making it clear that there was no room in the New Order for the Old Order, with its traditional liturgy (Quo Primum), its traditional doctrine (Extra ecclesiam nulla salus), and even its traditional moral theology (enter Fiducia Supplicans, whereby Pope Francis called for the Church to bless same-sex couples).
In this week’s Underground, I look back over the post-Vatican II period and the popes who canceled the Latin Mass -- a bullwork against the errors of the Modernists. And this was done according to the spirit of Vatican II – which even Pope Benedict XVI finally admitted had caused “so many disasters, so many problems, so much suffering: seminaries closed, convents closed, and the liturgy was banalized –and the real Council had difficulty establishing itself; the virtual Council was stronger than the real Council.” (Last Address to the Roman Clergy, February 14, 2013)
The present turmoil in the Catholic Church is just the latest iteration of Modernism’s war for control of the future of the Catholic Church – will it return to Tradition, or will it be the great reset of the largest Christian Church in the world?
This is revolution/counterrevolution and, as it plays out, we the scattered sheep are pawns in a massive game of theological chess between Christ and Antichrist. We are living out our faith in a fog of war, and we need to keep our heads. We need to pray to the Holy Ghost, that He will help us discern God’s Holy Will as His Bride and our mother is enchained by Modernism.
I don’t pretend to have all the answers but after so many years fighting in these trenches, there are no questions I will not ask in the middle of the most diabolical revolution against God and His Church in the history of the world. I am sure many will disagree with me, and that is to be expected. But for God’s sake and the sake of our children, we must not turn on each other. That is precisely what the Revolution wants us to do, and we need to make sure they are frustrated by what we do next.
God wins in the end, and we need to stick together as we keep in mind that the Father of Lies has free reign in this world right now. During such diabolical disorientation, friends, nothing is as it seems. St. Athanasius of Alexandria, pray for us.
Dear Friends: People who live in glass (papal) palaces shouldn’t throw stones. The Vatican likes to brag about how merciful they are but have evidently failed to notice the hypocrisy of brutally kicking faithful Catholics out of the Church without even giving them a fair hearing.
They say they want to listen to the people, but evidently only if the people parrot back to them what the Vatican wanted them to say in the first place.
They say they are synodal and yet behave like rigid idealogues to those who disagree with their new ideas. Most recently, the world looked on in disbelief as the Vatican refused to hear the desperate cries of a million Latin Mass Catholics whose only crime was an earnest desire to keep the Faith of their fathers.
These rigid shepherds demand obedience of their sheep even after they themselves have offered an example of sustained disobedience to God’s law, the laws of the Church, and now even the natural law.
For a hundred years before Fiducia Supplicans detonated -- whereby the Vatican greenlit blessings for homosexual couples -- they had steadfastly refused to obey Our Lady's command to reveal the "Third Secret."
This, by the way, is the same apparition wherein Our Lady said: “More souls go to hell for sins of the flesh than for any other reason.” No wonder a Jimmy Martin-friendly Vatican would ignore Fatima for as long as possible.
Eventually, they trotted out a doctored-up version of her “Third Secret,” which even Mother Angelica famously declined to accept as legitimate. And of course, they've refused to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, exactly as she had asked. In fact, the world is still waiting.
Would that the Vatican were as patient with the SSPX as heaven has been with the Vatican.
In any case, in our day Pope Pius X’s prophecy has proven to be alarmingly accurate – Modernists have infiltrated the Church.
The good news? They will fail. In fact, they’re failing already. Far from blowing the Traditional Catholic counterrevolution apart, their recent pharisaical crackdown on Latin Mass Catholics is backfiring. The SSPX has forced the Vatican's true agenda into the light, thus helping millions to see the destructive nature of their Revolution.
My new Underground contains a special message to the Catholic clans of the world: Do not lose hope! To beat them at their own game -- and to not be deceived by their forked tongues -- we must develop a better understanding of the Modernist Revolution and what the endgame has always been. God has not abandoned His Church. I am just old enough to remember what the great pioneer traditionalists did when all of this happened the first time around. At that point, the Latin Mass had been “abrogated” and was gone forever. And then 1988 happened!

Dear Friends: The Catholic Church is on the verge of civil war. And who’s getting excommunicated? Certainly not Cardinal Bob or Father Jimmy! But wait, there’s more!
This morning, Pope Leo sent a letter to the leadership of the Society of St. Pius X, warning them not to tear the “seamless tunic” of Christ’s Church in half tomorrow. He says he is finally ready to dialogue.
“Trust us! We’re from the Vatican, and we’re here to help!”
I'm sorry, but maybe His Holiness should have thought of that before continuing his predecessor’s mad rampage to cancel the Latin Mass worldwide -- a big part of the reason the SSPX is seeking recourse in the emergency provisions of Canon Law to safeguard the Traditional Mass and Sacraments in the first place.
With due respect, does His Holiness think we're suffering from Stockholm Syndrome to such an extent that as the Vatican continues to ruthlessly rip the Latin Mass out of our lives, we’d somehow welcome a papal sermon on how the SSPX is tearing the seamless tunic apart? Since that Latin Mass is the only Mass our children ever knew, Traditionis Custodes is basically an encyclical letter instructing our children to go to hell.
Trust the Vatican? Why ever would the SSPX do that?
And what about the Vatican's role in tearing the “seamless tunic” to shreds by throwing traditionalists out of their churches, treating their priests like criminals, and driving their communities into gymnasiums? Just ask Bishop Michael Martin of Charlotte how it works.
And this is to say nothing about the clerical sex scandals that have been rocking the Church ever since our children can remember. But the SSPX is the problem, because they want to establish oases of Catholic life for our kids in the middle of the spiritual desert the Vatican has made of the Catholic Church?
Meanwhile, we’ve got some Novus Latin Mass buffs – perched precariously on the fence, moistened fingers in the air – trying to please the guards by throwing the SSPX even further under the bus: “The SSPX are behaving like Protestants,” they solemnly inform their follower. “We are NOT like THEM!”
It’s not that I don’t admire their courage to speak in the absence of knowledge but were it not for Archbishop Lefebvre, these guys would never have had the Latin Masses Francis canceled in the first place. Why not? Because that Mass would have died the death in August of 1988.
But that doesn't stop these windbags with liturgical preferences and an assigned seat in the choir loft. Nope, they tell us that Archbishop Lefebvre and his successors are "no better than Martin Luther."
Okay, but two talking points about that:
1) From the point of view of the ecumenical all-religions-are-good Vatican, even if that were true -- and the SSPX is just a modern iteration of Martin Luther -- wouldn't that be a good thing? 2) Ever since Pope Paul VI invited six Protestant consultants to Vatican II, the Vatican has been obsessively Protestant-friendly. Why, we even got a thoroughly Protestantized Mass out of the deal.
So, if the SSPX were to act more Protestant, they obviously wouldn't be getting excommunicated in the first place. This might be quite funny, I suppose, were it not so tragically indicative of a massive state of emergency in the Catholic Church... that starts right at the top!
No matter where you come down on the SSPX, do not let Cardinal Tucho Fernandez blow us all apart. The SSPX is NOT the problem in the Church today. Pray for the Pope, pray for the SSPX, and unite the clans.
Dear Friends: Does the Vatican still accept the Catholic Church’s Bible-based teaching against homosexual acts? Yes, or no!
Does your bishop Admonish the Sinner anymore? Yes, or no!
Is your diocese celebrating Pride Month? Yes, or no!
From popes blessing homosexual couples, to Pride in Catholic elementary schools, to Catholic scouting organizations allowing homosexual scout leaders -- Why Excommunicate the SSPX while THIS Scandal Rocks the Church?
That's what I ask in this week's Underground. Predictably, our neoCatholic friends are trotting out the trope that we’re “behaving like Protestants,” merely for asking these questions.
But, here's the thing: We're not the ones who commemorated the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Revolt in Lund, Sweden. That was Pope Francis!
We didn't meet with that woman pretending to be the Archbishop of Canterbury. That was Pope Leo!
We didn’t mark the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's birth by writing a letter of praise for his “deep religious devotion and profound piety." That was Pope John Paul II!
We didn’t claim that Protestant sects are “pathways to God,” and neither did we issue a Vatican stamp celebrating the Protestant Revolt. The pope did that, just as he installed a statue of Martin Luther in the Vatican, too.
We didn’t tear the statues out of Catholic sanctuaries like a bunch of unhinged Roundheads sixty years ago, and neither did we invite Protestant observers to Vatican II to help make the Catholic Liturgy more palatable to Protestants.
Come to think of it, of all Catholics in the Church today, we’re the only ones begging the postconciliar popes to STOP behaving like Protestants.
And what’s this have to do with the Society of St. Pius X? Well, if they would just behave more like Protestants, they wouldn’t need to be excommunicated next month. As it is, they're entirely too Catholic. . . and THAT's the problem!
Dear Friends: The debate over the Society of St. Pius X has NOTHING to do with where you go to Mass. Rather, it is over whether in a few weeks' time the SSPX will disqualify themselves from the Catholic counterrevolution through the mortal sin of schism.
Otherwise, unless you attend Mass in a SSPX chapel, it’s really none of your business. The SSPX is simply taking steps to ensure successors for their bishops – consecrated by Archbishop Lefebvre forty years ago – two of whom have already passed away.
This is their business, not ours!
Besides, the July 1 consecrations of bishops in Écône may be news to you, but it's not to me. Here at The Remnant, I went through this forty years ago. There is no argument -- pro and con -- I have not heard, and from qualified canon lawyers on both sides.
The only difference this time around is that with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, we all know how it ends: The SSPX never elected their own pope (as was predicted in 1988), never started their own Church (as was predicted in 1988), and never ceased praying for the pope by name at every Mass, every day, all throughout the world.
So, if this is schism, it’s the weirdest dang schism in history, which is why, in my new Underground, Bishop Athanasius Schneider explains that it’s no schism at all.
So, let’s stop God-bothering our brothers and sisters in the SSPX, shall we? They are adults who have reconciled their decision to practice the Faith in Society chapels, despite an irregular canonical status. That decision is between them and God!
If you are new to all this -- and you're nervous about the SSPX consecrations -- so be it! There is no priest or bishop in the SSPX who would hold that against you. The ship is going down, and the passengers are scrambling for lifeboats. We should neither expect nor demand lockstep agreement on every point.
So before going off half-cocked against your brothers in the SSPX, please watch my new Underground, keeping in mind that I am not SSPX. I have attended a diocesan-approved Latin Mass for thirty years.

Why Did Archbishop Lefebvre Dedicate his Society to Pope Pius X?
Dear Friends: Archbishop Lefebvre was a Council Father at the Second Vatican Council. In 1987 – the year before he defied the Vatican by consecrating bishops without papal mandate – he wrote a book titled “They Have Uncrowned Him” on the subversion of orthodoxy by Vatican II.
Far from a reckless renegade, this personal friend of Pope Pius XII and head of the Holy Ghost Fathers was absolutely convinced that his beloved Church was suffering a state of emergency whose roots had been exposed 80 years earlier by Pope Pius X in PASCENDI DOMINICI GREGIS, ON THE DOCTRINES OF THE MODERNISTS.
On September 8, 1907, the greatest pope of the Twentieth Century promulgated the most prophetic encyclical of the Twentieth Century, urgently warning against what he called the “synthesis of all heresies” which, if left unchecked, would destroy the human element of the Catholic Church.
Three years later, in 1910, he mandated every Catholic priest take the Oath Against Modernism. The prophet-pope was attempting to kill the coming new world order in its cradle.
If you want to understand what has happened to the Catholic Church today, you need only read Pascendi. Let me give you just the second paragraph of Pascendi:
“That We make no delay in this matter is rendered necessary especially by the fact that the partisans of error are to be sought not only among the Church's open enemies; they lie hid… in her very bosom and heart... We allude, Venerable Brethren, to . . . Catholic laity…and the ranks of the priesthood itself, who, feigning a love for the Church….[and] thoroughly imbued with the poisonous doctrines taught by the enemies of the Church… vaunt themselves as reformers of the Church and … assail all that is most sacred in the work of Christ, not sparing even the person of the Divine Redeemer, whom… they reduce to a simple, mere man.”
I’m just old enough to remember when those same "reformers" went ahead and "reformed" the entire Roman Rite. As Pius had predicted, Catholic churches have been closing ever since.

And why is the Vatican at war with the Society of Saint Pius X? Because the Vatican is teeming with Modernists who are still battling the spirit of the one bishop at Vatican II who'd called them out for uncrowning Christ the King.
The war goes on, in other words, and we are all at the heart of it. St. Pius X famously said that the “true friends of the people are neither the innovators nor the revolutionaries, but the traditionalists.” That's you, that's all of us. So, in the spirit of St. Pius X, let's resist these 'partisans of error' to their faces.

A Message from Little Lucy
Dear Friends: If you’re a practicing Catholic, I have a question for you: Do you believe in Angels? Serious question. Do you honestly believe that you have a guardian angel?
In my new Underground, I get back to basics, because I earnestly want to know if Catholics still believe what Catholics have always believed. Do we believe, for example, that Jesus Christ instituted Seven Sacraments that are necessary for salvation?
The reason I ask is because the Modernist revolution inside the Catholic Church has been chipping away at these basic Catholic beliefs all our lives. And I want to know how many of us have held on.
Dolly Parton died this week. May God be merciful to her. She wasn’t Catholic. But when she died, many Catholics took to social media to share their opinion that she went straight heaven. And for this reason, Dolly’s passing shines light on how successful the Revolution has been. Because if Dolly went straight to heaven – as Father James Martin and his America Magazine said she did – then how important are the Seven Sacraments anymore? Dolly never went to Confession. She never received Our Lord in Holy Communion. Did not even have benefit of the Last Rites or a Requiem.
So, the question asks itself: If non-Catholics don’t need the Sacraments to be saved, how important can they be? And if salvation outside of the Catholic Church is now guaranteed to all nice people who die, how important can the Catholic Church be anymore?
This is not about Dolly Parton. This is about us. It’s not Dolly’s fault that the post-Vatican II popes have been sounding an uncertain trumpet for decades. It’s not her fault that Catholic priests don’t talk about the four last things very much at all anymore. It’s not her fault that from Pope Francis’s infamous “who am I to judge,” to his “all religions are pathways to God,” to Pope Leo’s recent admonition that we not cling to “religious certainties” – the world has gotten the message – everyone’s saved and, if Hell exists, nobody’s in it!

"Catholic" Marxism & L'Affaire SSPX
Dear Friends: In this RTV Short, I comment on what the Vatican is really doing with respect to the Society of St. Pius X. HINT: "The issue is never the issue. The issue is always the Revolution."
This maxim -- which originated among 1960s radical Marxist groups -- can be applied to the Vatican's grievances against the SSPX, which are not the true end goal, but rather tools used by these promoters of the New Order to permanently overturn the old Catholic order.
In fact, it could even be said that here the Vatican is taking a page out of Saul Alinsky's tactical philosophy manual, "Rules for Radicals."
Still, while good men will come down on both sides of the SSPX controversy, it is obvious that the Vatican's end game is not to save souls from the mortal sin of schism but rather to promote the Modernist Revolution by excommunicating those defending 2000 years of Catholic Tradition.
It's the SSPX today, and the rest of us tomorrow. How do I know? Because the issue is never the issue. The issue is always the Revolution!

Bishop Eleganti, the SSPX, and the Circular Firing Squad
Dear Friends: I am back from a successful mission trip to Tanzania. We summited Mount Kilimanjaro, and our expedition was accompanied by two missionary priests of the Holy Cross who celebrated the Latin Mass every day, all the way to the top of the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
Nearly $100 thousand was raised and the future of the Latin Mass movement in Tanzania seems bright indeed. And for me personally it was a pleasant relief to step away from the civil wars over the SSPX consecrations, which seem much more intense here in the States than in Tanzania.
Honestly, with the coming economic collapse, the political meltdown, and the AI revolution against God and Man, I cannot imagine why anyone would be wasting time bickering over the SSPX. In fact, let me offer one example of how to avoid the circular firing squad altogether.
Last year, I invited His Excellency Bishop Marian Eleganti to speak at the CIC. I ran into him on the Borgo Pio in Rome and was delighted to make his acquaintance. We agreed on many important issues, and I ended up inviting him to speak at the CIC.
His Excellency hesitated, since he had not learned to celebrate the Latin Mass, even though he’s sympathetic to our cause. In the interest of building a coalition against Synodality and other leaky lifeboats, I insisted and His Excellency was gracious enough to join us at the CIC the following October.
His talk went over very well, and I’m happy to consider him a friend to this day. Do we agree on everything? Of course not! And here’s where I’d like to use him as an example of the sad reality we all face right now.
Bishop Eleganti is my friend, but he is the very last person I would expect to offer public agreement with the SSPX consecrations. In fact, I can’t imagine why anyone would expect him to. Bishop Eleganti is retired. He fought the good fight wherever he could, and finally incurred the wrath of the late Pope Francis.
Nevertheless, the issue with the SSPX is not the SSPX itself. The issue is the Revolution. One’s understanding of the true nature of the plot to undermine Christ’s Church through Modernist infiltration will determine one’s understanding of the SSPX consecrations themselves.
In other words, if you don’t accept that the Church today is in the most detrimental state of emergency since the Arian Hersey, it’s likely you will not understand why the SSPX acted as they did.
If a bishop went his entire career without even developing enough of an understanding of the crisis in the Church to recognize the Novus Ordo Mass as the touchstone of the Revolution, of course, he’s not going to agree with the SSPX.
Through no fault of his own, Bishop Eleganti lacks a profound enough appreciation of the crisis. He’s still offering the New Mass, even in retirement.
And I say this with all the respect in the world for my friend Bishop Eleganti. It is not his fault. It’s just the reality. I need not condemn him. In fact, from what I know of him already, it’s only a matter of time before he’ll begin to see – just as Bishop Athanasius Schneider sees – that “if the Holy See were to take the position of the SSPX seriously, it would mark the beginning of the end of the Modernist project within the Church.” (Bishop A. Now, extrapolate that to your friends, your family, and all the good folks who only joined the Latin Mass movement during Covid. Of course, they do not have the same understanding of the crisis in the Church which the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre dedicated his life to opposing. Of course, they are going to balk at the consecrations.
And of course, those of us who have been in this fight for decades need not take their remonstrations too terribly seriously. We “been there done that” forty years ago.
For sixty years, the Catholic Faith has been watered down by the Modernist occupiers of the Catholic Church to such an extent that, today, most Catholics do not even know what it means to be Catholic. Again, through no fault of their own. THAT is the crisis in the Catholic Church, in fact!
If they lack Catholic formation to that extent, it is highly unlikely that they will fully understand the truly diabolical nature of the state of emergency in the Catholic Church today.
So, what do we do? Don’t let them play us against each other. We also need a meeting of the clans, in person, and sooner than later. In God’s Providence, that meeting will happen in October in Pittsburgh.
In this week’s video, I explain why the Catholic Identity Conference 2026 is more important than ever before. No matter where you come down on the SSPX, the Revolution is the problem – not the SSPX. If you do not understand why the SSPX did what they did, fine! Just move along and let the circular firing squad fire their pop guns without you.
Don’t let the Cardinals Tucho, Roche, and Cupich blow us apart. Hold the Catholic ground and let the Vatican wonder what you think about their condemnation of our brothers in the SSPX.
Let them think that maybe – just maybe – if they keep trying to cancel the Latin Mass, you might join the migration into the SSPX catacomb until the Vatican returns to its Catholic senses. Let them wonder what you’ll do next because traditionalists being unpredictable in this regard will help keep the Tradition-phobic Vatican off balance, and that's good.

The Loose Canons of Revolution
Dear Friends: What’s the more strategic approach where Bishop Thomas Paprocki is concerned – to focus solely on the low-hanging fruit (his likening of the SSPX to a Protestant sect), or to highlight His Excellency’s inadvertent acknowledgment of the very same state of emergency which motivated the SSPX to consecrate bishops without papal mandate in the first place?
That’s the subject of this week’s Remnant Underground: “PAPROCKI v. SSPX: The Price of 'Full Communion' in the Synodal Church”
Even if you disagree with the SSPX, the truth is they've exposed the rank hypocrisy of the Synodal Church which evidently has little interest in listening to the sheep unless, of course, the sheep are regurgitating Synodal wokeness, in which case the Vatican is all ears.
Bishop Paprocki is a canon lawyer. He knows the law. And since the 1983 Code of Canon Law is heavily imbued with the spirit of Modernism, he also knows that it suffers from a lack of objectivity. The Code’s provisions for acting against the law during a state of emergency, for instance, are entirely too subjective.
Italian canon lawyer and legal scholar, Count Neri Capponi, defended Archbishop Lefebvre against the charge of “schism": “You cannot apply the ‘standards’ of the new code of canon law and the ‘mentality’ of the old code. According to the new code, Lefebvre could do what he did with a Catholic intention, and he did what he did in ‘sincerity’ and invoked the ‘state of emergency’ argument, which the new code permits. You might not like the new code, but it’s what governs the Church.” (The Latin Mass Magazine, 1990)
Exactly! And on July 1, 2026, the sons of Archbishop Lefebvre acted in the same way. With “Catholic intention” and “sincerity”, they invoked the “state of emergency argument which the new code permits.” And so, it is up to us to decide whether there is, in fact, a state of emergency which warrants such extraordinary measures.
Cardinal Burke says, no, there is no state of emergency. And that is his opinion, but it certainly does not settle the matter. Archbishop Vigano is so convinced that there is an unprecedented emergency in the Church today that he was "excommunicated" for his efforts to expose it. But this is not the end of the matter, either.
I have interviewed Bishop Athanasius Schneider many times, and it is his opinion that we are indeed in a state of emergency. Bishop Joseph Strickland concurs. But, still, due to the subjectivity of the canon in question, the matter remains unsettled.
Who gets to decide when there is a state of emergency? Count Capponi held that the state of emergency today is worse than Arianism and for the following four reasons:
1) The principal vehicle of the faith, the liturgy, was untouched by the Arian crisis;
2) Whereas the Arian crisis was precipitated and sustained by the intervention of secular power, the post Vatican II crisis comes from within the Church and is therefore more difficult to fight;
3) In the fourth century, Pope Liberius finally signed the excommunication of St. Athanasius under duress—in the twentieth century Pope Paul VI was admittedly taken in and hoodwinked by his misguided optimism, but there was no duress;
4) The present crisis is not only one of faith but of morals as well. In addition, today not only one dogma, albeit a very important one, is denied as with Arianism, but all dogmas, be it even the existence of a personal God!
No state of emergency? Seriously!?
Bishop Paprocki does not agree that there is a state of emergency, at least not in so many words. His actions, on the other hand, seem to suggest otherwise. He is one of a handful of bishops who provides no LGBT “outreach” in his diocese, he promotes the Latin Mass, and he rejects the very notion that Protestantism is just another pathway to God (as Pope Francis said it was).
Bishop Paprocki says the very existence of Protestantism is a “scandal” and that all Protestant denominations need to return to the Catholic Church, thus putting himself at odds with the Synodal Church. In fact, Bishop Paprocki’s orthodoxy drags him much closer to the bishops of the SSPX than Cardinals Cupich, Radcliffe, and McElroy.
So, where does Bishop Paprocki go from here, now that he too finds it impossible to obey the Homo-Synodal Church of Synodality? In my new Underground, I encourage him to take his positions to their logical conclusion – because he, not unlike the SSPX, is in fact reacting to the state of emergency.
Considered in this light, the SSPX is not the issue. As every good Marxist knows, the issue is NEVER the issue. The issue is ALWAYS the Revolution.
This week’s Underground raises arguments against the Revolution that I believe will resonate with sincere Catholics everywhere, whether or not they agree with the SSPX’s response to the Revolution.
Bottom line: The Revolution is coming after all faithful Catholics . . . including, ultimately, Bishop Paprocki – the SSPX just got in the way.
Throwing the SSPX under the bus, therefore, is not going to save any of us – including Bishop Paprocki.

The Catholic Crisis
Dear Friends: To borrow from Mr. Paine, these are the times that try men’s souls. The crisis within the human element of the Catholic Church is beyond trying, it's soul-crushing. But as bad as things are, there are precedents.
At the moment, the Society of St. Pius X feel obliged in conscience to go against the will of the Pope in Rome. This causes understandable concern for many people, especially those who may not fully appreciate the diabolical nature of the Modernist Revolution that has been tearing the Church apart for more than a century.
In anticipation of this, Our Lord Himself set the precedent for what the scattered sheep must do when the shepherd is struck. In Luke 22, Jesus says to Peter: “But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.” And Peter said unto him, “Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.” And Jesus said, “I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.”
This was before Pentecost, yes, but a foreboding precedent nevertheless! And so, today, we too pray that Peter’s faith will not fail him and that, if it does, we will not be scandalized.
Where was Peter at the foot of the Cross? Exactly!
Which apostle denied even knowing Jesus? Exactly!
History is filled with popes who fell short – from Peter to Liberius, from John XXII to Honorius, from Paul VI to Francis. Since the Revolution of Vatican II, the Holy See has been occupied by disoriented popes who have embraced semi-Modernist propositions, not unlike Pope Liberius of the 4th century who, under duress, embraced Semi-Arian propositions. Before it was over, Pope Liberius had signed the decree of excommunication of the great St. Athanasius.
Saint Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, honorably resisted Pope Liberius to his face. He did not crown himself pope nor start his own Church. He prayed for Peter and then resisted him to his face in filial charity. In the name of safeguarding the Faith – even against a disoriented pope – Saint Athanasius stood virtually alone against the world.
For his part, Pope Liberius (the first pope not canonized) eventually recanted his errors and died in the good graces of the Church in the year 366. Ten centuries later, Pope John XXII recanted his heresy as well and also died in the good graces of the Church. In both cases, it was the laity who resisted the popes and finally prevailed on good bishops (such as St. Athanasius) to lead their resistance, thus helping to preserve the Faith.
In our time, the Society of St. Pius X finds itself in a similar dilemma, caught between the rock of obedience and the hard place of the first law of the Church which is to preserve the Faith. Theologians and historians have been debating similar upheavals in the Church ever since St. Paul resisted Peter to his face in Antioch in the 1st century (Galatians 2).
We are not going to settle this controversy overnight, and as it was in the past, good men will come down on both sides of it. The harsh reality today is that not Arianism but the smoke of Modernism – which Pope St. Pius X defined as the “synthesis of all heresies” – has “entered the temple of God” as if through “some fissure” . . . the “fissure” being the spirit of Vatican II.
To usher in their New Order, the post-conciliar Vatican established a regime of novelty, complete with a New Evangelization, New Liturgical Calander, New Code of Canon Law, New Rosary, New Catechism, and a whole New Order of Mass to replace the Traditional Latin Mass codified by Pope Saint Pius V in 1570 via his papal bull, Quo Primum, which granted all priests the perpetual right to celebrate the old Latin Mass.
The modern popes scrapped both Quo Primum and Pope Pius X’s famous “Oath Against Modernism,” making it clear that there was no room in the New Order for the Old Order, with its traditional liturgy (Quo Primum), its traditional doctrine (Extra ecclesiam nulla salus), and even its traditional moral theology (enter Fiducia Supplicans, whereby Pope Francis called for the Church to bless same-sex couples).
In this week’s Underground, I look back over the post-Vatican II period and the popes who canceled the Latin Mass -- a bullwork against the errors of the Modernists. And this was done according to the spirit of Vatican II – which even Pope Benedict XVI finally admitted had caused “so many disasters, so many problems, so much suffering: seminaries closed, convents closed, and the liturgy was banalized –and the real Council had difficulty establishing itself; the virtual Council was stronger than the real Council.” (Last Address to the Roman Clergy, February 14, 2013)
The present turmoil in the Catholic Church is just the latest iteration of Modernism’s war for control of the future of the Catholic Church – will it return to Tradition, or will it be the great reset of the largest Christian Church in the world?
This is revolution/counterrevolution and, as it plays out, we the scattered sheep are pawns in a massive game of theological chess between Christ and Antichrist. We are living out our faith in a fog of war, and we need to keep our heads. We need to pray to the Holy Ghost, that He will help us discern God’s Holy Will as His Bride and our mother is enchained by Modernism.

I am sure many will disagree with me, and that is to be expected. But for God’s sake and the sake of our children, we must not turn on each other. That is precisely what the Revolution wants us to do, and we need to make sure they are frustrated by what we do next.

Papal Disobedience in the Light of Fatima
Dear Friends:
People who live in glass (papal) palaces shouldn’t throw stones. The Vatican likes to brag about how merciful they are but have evidently failed to notice the hypocrisy of brutally kicking faithful Catholics out of the Church without even giving them a fair hearing.
They say they want to listen to the people, but evidently only if the people parrot back to them what the Vatican wanted them to say in the first place.
They say they are synodal and yet behave like rigid idealogues to those who disagree with their new ideas. Most recently, the world looked on in disbelief as the Vatican refused to hear the desperate cries of a million Latin Mass Catholics whose only crime was an earnest desire to keep the Faith of their fathers.
These rigid shepherds demand obedience of their sheep even after they themselves have offered an example of sustained disobedience to God’s law, the laws of the Church, and now even the natural law.
For a hundred years before Fiducia Supplicans detonated -- whereby the Vatican greenlit blessings for homosexual couples -- they had steadfastly refused to obey Our Lady's command to reveal the "Third Secret."
This, by the way, is the same apparition wherein Our Lady said: “More souls go to hell for sins of the flesh than for any other reason.” No wonder a Jimmy Martin-friendly Vatican would ignore Fatima for as long as possible.
Eventually, they trotted out a doctored-up version of her “Third Secret,” which even Mother Angelica famously declined to accept as legitimate. And of course, they've refused to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, exactly as she had asked. In fact, the world is still waiting.
Would that the Vatican were as patient with the SSPX as heaven has been with the Vatican.
In any case, in our day Pope Pius X’s prophecy has proven to be alarmingly accurate – Modernists have infiltrated the Church.
The good news? They will fail. In fact, they’re failing already. Far from blowing the Traditional Catholic counterrevolution apart, their recent pharisaical crackdown on Latin Mass Catholics is backfiring. The SSPX has forced the Vatican's true agenda into the light, thus helping millions to see the destructive nature of their Revolution.
My new Underground contains a special message to the Catholic clans of the world: Do not lose hope! To beat them at their own game -- and to not be deceived by their forked tongues -- we must develop a better understanding of the Modernist Revolution and what the endgame has always been. God has not abandoned His Church. I am just old enough to remember what the great pioneer traditionalists did when all of this happened the first time around. At that point, the Latin Mass had been “abrogated” and was gone forever. And then 1988 happened!

Pope Leo’s Letter to the SSPX
Dear Friends: The Catholic Church is on the verge of civil war. The Vatican has greenlit the homosexual lifestyle, as I proved in last week’s Underground: https://youtu.be/wNxNVbuBfhw?si=GjyqU... and this week we have Cardinal Bob McElroy teaming up with Father Jimmy Martin for an alphabet soup conference that beautifully confirms what I was saying last week.
And who’s getting excommunicated? Certainly not Cardinal Bob or Father Jimmy! But wait, there’s more!
This morning, Pope Leo sent a letter to the leadership of the Society of St. Pius X, warning them not to tear the “seamless tunic” of Christ’s Church in half tomorrow. He says he is finally ready to dialogue.
“Trust us! We’re from the Vatican, and we’re here to help!”
I'm sorry, but maybe His Holiness should have thought of that before continuing his predecessor’s mad rampage to cancel the Latin Mass worldwide -- a big part of the reason the SSPX is seeking recourse in the emergency provisions of Canon Law to safeguard the Traditional Mass and Sacraments in the first place.
With due respect, does His Holiness think we're suffering from Stockholm Syndrome to such an extent that as the Vatican continues to ruthlessly rip the Latin Mass out of our lives, we’d somehow welcome a papal sermon on how the SSPX is tearing the seamless tunic apart? Since that Latin Mass is the only Mass our children ever knew, Traditionis Custodes is basically an encyclical letter instructing our children to go to hell.
Trust the Vatican? Why ever would the SSPX do that?
And what about the Vatican's role in tearing the “seamless tunic” to shreds by throwing traditionalists out of their churches, treating their priests like criminals, and driving their communities into gymnasiums? Just ask Bishop Michael Martin of Charlotte how it works.
And this is to say nothing about the clerical sex scandals that have been rocking the Church ever since our children can remember. But the SSPX is the problem, because they want to establish oases of Catholic life for our kids in the middle of the spiritual desert the Vatican has made of the Catholic Church?
Meanwhile, we’ve got some Novus Latin Mass buffs – perched precariously on the fence, moistened fingers in the air – trying to please the guards by throwing the SSPX even further under the bus: “The SSPX are behaving like Protestants,” they solemnly inform their follower. “We are NOT like THEM!”
It’s not that I don’t admire their courage to speak in the absence of knowledge but were it not for Archbishop Lefebvre, these guys would never have had the Latin Masses Francis canceled in the first place. Why not? Because that Mass would have died the death in August of 1988.
But that doesn't stop these windbags with liturgical preferences and an assigned seat in the choir loft. Nope, they tell us that Archbishop Lefebvre and his successors are "no better than Martin Luther."
Okay, but two talking points about that:
1) From the point of view of the ecumenical all-religions-are-good Vatican, even if that were true -- and the SSPX is just a modern iteration of Martin Luther -- wouldn't that be a good thing?
2) Ever since Pope Paul VI invited six Protestant consultants to Vatican II, the Vatican has been obsessively Protestant-friendly. Why, we even got a thoroughly Protestantized Mass out of the deal.
So, if the SSPX were to act more Protestant, they obviously wouldn't be getting excommunicated in the first place. This might be quite funny, I suppose, were it not so tragically indicative of a massive state of emergency in the Catholic Church... that starts right at the top!

SSPX vs Vatican: Who’s The Protestant?
Dear Friends: Does the Vatican still accept the Catholic Church’s Bible-based teaching against homosexual acts? Yes, or no!
Does your bishop Admonish the Sinner anymore? Yes, or no!
Is your diocese celebrating Pride Month? Yes, or no!
From popes blessing homosexual couples, to Pride in Catholic elementary schools, to Catholic scouting organizations allowing homosexual scout leaders -- Why Excommunicate the SSPX while THIS Scandal Rocks the Church?
That's what I ask in this week's Underground. Predictably, our neoCatholic friends are trotting out the trope that we’re “behaving like Protestants,” merely for asking these questions.
But, here's the thing: We're not the ones who commemorated the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Revolt in Lund, Sweden. That was Pope Francis!
We didn't meet with that woman pretending to be the Archbishop of Canterbury. That was Pope Leo!
We didn’t mark the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's birth by writing a letter of praise for his “deep religious devotion and profound piety." That was Pope John Paul II!
We didn’t claim that Protestant sects are “pathways to God,” and neither did we issue a Vatican stamp celebrating the Protestant Revolt. The pope did that, just as he installed a statue of Martin Luther in the Vatican, too.
We didn’t tear the statues out of Catholic sanctuaries like a bunch of unhinged Roundheads sixty years ago, and neither did we invite Protestant observers to Vatican II to help make the Catholic Liturgy more palatable to Protestants.
Come to think of it, of all Catholics in the Church today, we’re the only ones begging the postconciliar popes to STOP behaving like Protestants.
And what’s this have to do with the Society of St. Pius X? Well, if they would just behave more like Protestants, they wouldn’t need to be excommunicated next month. As it is, they're entirely too Catholic. . . and THAT's the problem!

SSPX consecrations -- I already got the T-shirt!
Dear Friends: The debate over the Society of St. Pius X has NOTHING to do with where you go to Mass. Rather, it is over whether in a few weeks' time the SSPX will disqualify themselves from the Catholic counterrevolution through the mortal sin of schism.
Otherwise, unless you attend Mass in a SSPX chapel, it’s really none of your business. The SSPX is simply taking steps to ensure successors for their bishops – consecrated by Archbishop Lefebvre forty years ago – two of whom have already passed away.
This is their business, not ours!
Besides, the July 1 consecrations of bishops in Écône may be news to you, but it's not to me. Here at The Remnant, I went through this forty years ago. There is no argument -- pro and con -- I have not heard, and from qualified canon lawyers on both sides.
The only difference this time around is that with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, we all know how it ends: The SSPX never elected their own pope (as was predicted in 1988), never started their own Church (as was predicted in 1988), and never ceased praying for the pope by name at every Mass, every day, all throughout the world.
So, if this is schism, it’s the weirdest dang schism in history, which is why, in my new Underground, Bishop Athanasius Schneider explains that it’s no schism at all.
So, let’s stop God-bothering our brothers and sisters in the SSPX, shall we? They are adults who have reconciled their decision to practice the Faith in Society chapels, despite an irregular canonical status. That decision is between them and God!
If you are new to all this -- and you're nervous about the SSPX consecrations -- so be it! There is no priest or bishop in the SSPX who would hold that against you. The ship is going down, and the passengers are scrambling for lifeboats. We should neither expect nor demand lockstep agreement on every point.
So before going off half-cocked against your brothers in the SSPX, please watch my new Underground, keeping in mind that I am not SSPX. I have attended a diocesan-approved Latin Mass for thirty years.
I have no personal stake in this, over and above doing my part to keep and maintain the largest possible coalition of opposition against the worst crisis in the Church since the Arian Heresy -- a crisis which at the moment sees entire conferences of Catholic bishops blessing sodomite unions. (Your Honor, I rest my case!)
