For a while now, I've stopped using any kind of simplification method for my pencil sketches. I draw everything freehand, using simple guidelines... and it's been the best decision I've ever made.
Even if my drawings aren't 100% perfect in terms of proportions, this approach allows me to develop a more personal style. And with time, improvement is guaranteed.
If you're a self-taught artist and you rely on the grid method, tracing, or anything milar, I challenge you to try the same. It's a way to step out of your comfort zone.
