An update on the gerbils:

Unfortunately the bonding didn't work. A few days after we started, both the girls started clicking, so we went to the vet and treated for a respiratory infection, while Sandy very quickly got better, Zelda didn't. Over the next month we were back and fore to the vet trying various meds and treatments, we'd see some periods of improvement, followed by decline again. Eventually we saw a vet who was able to hear that Zelda's heart wasn't beating as fast as it should and she had a heart murmur. We got new meds to reduce fluid build up in her lungs and have continued mucolytic and nebuliser treatment which has kept her breathing clear so far. We were told she'd need an ultrasound to fully diagnose the issue, but unfortunately by that point, my vet fund had already been drained with all the vet trips, I'm hoping to save up again and maybe consider an ultrasound in the new year 🤞

Sadly with the bonding, every time they were put together, Sandy immediately arched, and would go in to attack if not removed straight away, this didn't change even slightly after 2 months of bonding, no matter what I tried. I do suspect Zelda's heart issues may have contributed to Sandy's reaction

On the plus side, even from day 1 of bonding, Sandy perked up immensely, her fur was smooth & shiny again and she was much more lively and confident, back to normal Sandy pants! If Zelda was healthy, my plan would be to rehome her to be bonded with someone else, then find another single for Sandy pants. But because of Zelda's health issues, it (a) wouldn't be fair to rehome her to anyone else and (b) may mean she would be left completely alone as her heart issues could make it difficult for another gerbil to accept her, as well as bonding putting added stress on an already weak heart, so that really wouldn't be the best thing for her

So in this rare instance, as they're both very friendly with each other through the divider, I've decided that the best compromise is to set them up in a permanent split, that way Zelda still has someone nearby she's friendly with, and although slightly less than ideal for Sandy, she's shown she's still getting massive benefits just from having Zelda next to her
