In 1986, she invented the Laserphaco Probe, a revolutionary device that used laser technology to remove cataracts more precisely and less invasively than previous methods. Her innovation helped restore vision to people who had been blind for decades.

She was also:
• The first Black woman physician to receive a medical patent
• A co-founder of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness
• A global advocate for equal access to eye care

Dr. Bath believed eyesight was a basic human right — not a privilege.

Because of her work, modern cataract surgery became safer, more effective, and more accessible worldwide. Millions of people today can see because she dared to innovate in spaces that were not designed for her.

She didn’t just change ophthalmology.
