Asking the question, 'what would our lives be like if we were more fully self expressed?

Podcast style, chatty videos about creativity, self expression and having CFS.

I've hit 4000 hours! Thank you to everyone who has been encouraging me to keep going.

I have some fun things planned by way of saying thank you and will be sharing over the next few weeks - hopefully with new and improved sound and camera (big promises I know!)

Several have reached out to say they are also now starting up YouTube channels, that is so amazing to hear. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to encourage or help you.

P S A handful of cartoons below for those that are unfamiliar with what I make. Go to linktr.ee/joannewhitlock to download for free your own worksheet of cartoons and add your own quotes or expressions.

Thank you to everyone who is still with me!

I want to create, and I'm currently ill. It's slow progress and this frustrates me more than I normally share.

I'm hoping that by you seeing me keep trying you will also feel like maybe you can make that thing, or do that thing that you would also really like to do.

It's humbling to start at the beginning when you look at others and feel they know so much more than you do.

The truth?

The truth is people are not always as brave as you may think they are.

They may just be really, really tired of not being who they were born to be.

For those interested in the YouTube journey check out the creative coaching session I had with ‪@anjakersten‬. So thrilled to be connected to someone who embodies the bravery and passion for creativity I aspire to communicate.

Thank you to Anja for making this public.

PS I kept saying I wanted to be more dangerous - and Anja was encouraging me - watch out!

I'm taking the recent feedback received as a chance to re-think and course correct.

Why?

This channel is super new and I'm here to find my people. I didn't realise that I would also be finding myself too.

I want to be sure I'm building something for the long term not chasing numbers.

I'd love you to stick with me and see what happens.

To those that have reached out and encouraged me - I think you are fab!

Can you guess which song I just watched? (Clue - it's Dimash, I said I had skipped it on purpose but you persuaded me to go back and listen)

To Dimash fans who have left comments - I have read all of them but not yet replied or hit 'like'. Why? Cause they disappear from my YouTube studio as soon as I do and you have all made so many recommendations I need to make a note of which songs you want me to react to next.

I've shared a quick video where I react to your comments so you know I'm here and I am listening.

Hi to my new subscribers who are fans of Dimash.

We don't know each other.

I wanted to let you know that I am very aware of how much I still have to learn for this YouTube creator stuff. I am working on the sound issues, with both the app creators and a local tech expert who I have contacted. I'd love to have you keep me company as I figure this out but understand if this isn't for you.

When I first started writing, teaching and creating I had a very specific idea of what that would like. How professional, how consistent etc. I am not currently able to reach that.

I started this channel last June 2nd (2024), two and a half years after becoming ill with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I was inspired by an artist, called Ren, to believe that maybe it was possible to create and express myself, even though my health might not improve. Ren has been diagnosed with Lyme disease and for the most part is unable to tour due to unpredictable energy levels. He still creates and has an amazing group of fans.

I am not comparing myself to Ren, just saying that I was inspired.

In the last nine months I have been incredibly fortunate to interview, and to meet, many others who want to express themselves and are in less than perfect situations.

Being on YouTube has felt way too loud and public to be learning these skills. Yet, this is my option. To create imperfectly or be silent.

Many of you have been lovely and generous with your comments, some are frustrated with me.

I wanted to be upfront with you that there will be no big leap in skills. Just slow, incremental progress.

Thank you for hanging out with me.

PS This is the type of cartoons I draw, inspired by what I see and hear - not an interpretation but an improvisation. They often reflect much more about me and my inner dialogue than the artist I was listening to.

I was just talking about how meaning can change - both in music and with my cartoons - depending on so many factors and, thought I would share this experiment with you.

I'm always fascinated when someone sees or hears something different in the reactions I listen to, and I enjoy playing with misunderstandings (or different interpretations) after years of doing everything I could - including being silent - to avoid them..
