Unfortunately, Lana has passed away. I had a feeling something was wrong when she buried herself many months ago, but I didn’t want to disturb her. When I recently redid my tank, I didn’t find her shell or body, but I did smell her, and that confirmed she had passed.

I got Lana about a year ago, and while our time together wasn’t long, it was truly special. She was one of my favorite hermit crabs—so active, so social, and always excited for food. Watching her explore and interact brought me so much happiness.

I believe she may have passed due to a failed molt, as she came from a difficult place and likely wasn’t strong enough to make it through. Still, I hope she found peace in her final moments.

Lana, thank you for the joy you brought into my life. You will be deeply missed, but always remembered. 🐚💜

Would you drink a whole bottle of prime water conditioner for $100,000?

Most hermit crabs you see at souvenir shops and beach stores are wild-caught — taken straight from their natural homes. The process is unbelievably cruel.

First, they’re ripped from the wild. Their natural shells are often cracked open to force them out, and they’re stuffed into painted shells that are toxic to them. Many crabs lose limbs during this.

Then, they’re thrown into wire cages without food, water, heat, humidity, or proper substrate. Hermit crabs have gills and need humid air and water to breathe. Without it, they slowly suffocate.

If they somehow survive this stage, they’re shipped in sacks to stores. Many don’t survive the journey due to stress, dehydration, and poor conditions.

At the store, they’re sold in tiny plastic cages with toxic food, painted shells, and no proper care information. Most people don’t know that hermit crabs can live up to 30–50 years with the right care — not just a few weeks.

Please, if you’re thinking about getting a hermit crab, do your research. And if you see someone buying one, kindly share what you know or encourage them to learn more.

Hermit crabs are not throwaway pets — they are delicate, complex animals who deserve respect and proper care.

Let’s spread awareness and work toward ending the cruel hermit crab trade.
