Cape Breton, nestled in the eastern part of Nova Scotia, was once a thriving hub of industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The abundant natural resources and strategic location of this island attracted industries such as coal mining, steel production, and textiles. The coal mines employed generations of families, the steel mills produced iron that built this nation, and the textile factories wove a fabric woven with resilience. However, as time passed and industries evolved, many of these buildings became obsolete. Slowly but surely, they were left to decay, becoming haunting reminders of a distant past. In this channel, I venture into these forgotten places, uncovering their stories while embracing the thrill of urban exploration.
Abandoned Cape Breton
A quick update from the rabbit hole…
A few weeks ago I went into the woods looking for a few abandoned cabins.
That was supposed to be the story.
Instead, I ended up spending the last few weeks digging through old aerial photographs, maps, LiDAR, mining records and about a century of local history trying to understand what else I had walked through without realizing it.
The next Abandoned Cape Breton story is coming together. It’s taking a little longer than I expected — but I think this one is worth taking the time to get right.
Funny how often that happens around here. You go looking for one thing and Cape Breton gives you something else entirely.
More soon.

Abandoned Cape Breton
Well, now that the roads are getting back to normal, I finally managed to get out and do a little exploring again.
Found a few interesting things out there too… some of which raised more questions than they answered.
Lots to dig into over the next little while.
Hope everyone made it through the weather alright. Good to be back out there.

Abandoned Cape Breton
Well… this weather has pretty much put the brakes on filming and exploring for the moment.
I had a few things I was hoping to get out and work on this long weekend, but Cape Breton apparently had other plans.
Plenty coming once things settle down. In the meantime, stay dry out there, folks — and stay safe.

Okay… I can finally let this one out of the bag.
The Abandoned Railway That Helped Build Cape Breton Part 1 premieres tonight.
What started as a regular episode grew into something much bigger — a new series!
It’s full of railway history, abandoned bridges, old photographs, personal memories, and some new filmmaking ideas I’ve never tried before.
This one took some time.
I think it was worth it.
I’ll be there in the live chat watching it with you.
Tonight — Abandoned Cape Breton.
Where did the trains go?

Abandoned Cape Breton
The next Abandoned Cape Breton documentary is still very much in progress. What started as a regular episode has grown into something a little bigger than I expected — more history, more personal memory, and a few new filmmaking ideas I wanted to try properly. There’s always another box of photos in someone’s closet…
It’s taking a little longer than usual, but I’m happy with where it’s going. Sometimes the story decides how long it needs.
Still working. Still digging. Getting closer.

A quick update from Abandoned Cape Breton...
I recently came across this abandoned bell, still hanging beneath the remains of a structure that has long since fallen silent. This weekend, I’m putting together a short piece about it.
I’ve also been deep into the research and writing for a much larger series. What began with an abandoned structure is becoming a journey into the Cape Breton that made it necessary: the communities, industries and connections once connected by a megastructure.
I’m keeping most of that story under wraps for now, but I’m very excited about where it is going.
In the meantime—does anyone recognize this bell or remember hearing one like it?

Hello Folks,
I appear on World Report on CBC Radio today, if you happen to catch it, and a segment on CBC television news after 6 pm today. Tune in if you like and see the guy behind the stories talk about the channel.

Abandoned Cape Breton
Hi folks, I'm working hard on the next upload. In the interim, I just finished an interview with Ethan Hunt of the CBC about the channel. Have a look for that on the local news tomorrow or in the next few days. I don't often like to self-promote, as you know, I prefer the focus to be on the stories I tell. If you want a rare look behind the scenes try the CBC news. New episode coming sooner than usual (had some vacation time I used to do some exploring and research). So, kind of a good news/good news update.

Was hoping to get the next episode up this weekend. It's all planned and I'm laying everything down now. Post effects are taking some time. But I thought I'd show you some progress. I'm about 1/3 of the way there, as you can see! Hoping this will be worth the wait.
