Lincoln Valentine “Style” Scott, a beloved member of the On-U Sound family.
Style’s involvement with On-U Sound goes back to Adrian Sherwood’s earliest recordings in the late 1970s playing with Creation Rebel on 1978’s ‘Close Encounters of the Third World’, and 1979s ‘Rebel Vibrations’, as well as being a member of Prince Far I’s backing band The Arabs where he collaborated once again with Sherwood on 1980s ‘Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter III’.
Style went on to play with a host of On-U acts such as New Age Steppers, African Head Charge, Bim Sherman and the Singers And Players, but Dub Syndicate - initially one of the many studio-based projects masterminded by Sherwood - would become the main vehicle for Style’s output on the On-U Sound label.
Often Style would lay down backing tracks in Kingston, Jamaica, sending the tapes to the UK so Adrian could arrange overdubs and work his mixing board magic when the tapes arrived in London. Almost all of Dub Syndicate's output was released by On-U Sound until the late 1990s, when Adrian helped Style set up his own Lion & Roots imprint, continuing to help out with co-production and mixing assistance.
That legacy was continued in 2025 with Sherwood going back to some of the original Dub Syndicate tapes to produce ‘Obscured By Version’, an album of new material released on 28th February 2025.
In addition to many much-loved studio albums such as Stoned Immaculate, Dub Syndicate also became a barnstorming live act and a staple of the festival circuit. An irreplaceable and unique musical talent is gone, but his music will live on forever.
"The whole idea of a Hostile Environment is the way we grew up in this country ..."
Out now, an interview with Creation Rebel where they discuss the making of Hostile Environment, the meaning behind the album, working with Prince Far I, and much more.
Further new music from Hostile Environment is out now. 'Creation Rebel - Under Pressure' is the latest single from Hostile Environment → https://youtu.be/iBsomSx0jYw
“Under Pressure” highlights a powerful vocal by drummer “Eskimo” Fox aka Charlie Mus’Come, an original member of the On-U Sound crew and alumni of the legendary Alpha Boys School: a vocational residential school run by nuns in Kingston, Jamaica that produced some of the instrumental greats to come from the island, including Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Rico Rodriguez, “Deadly” Headley Bennett, as well as vocalists such as Johnny Osbourne, Trinity and Yellowman.
It’s important to emphasise this lineage when it comes to the story of the On-U Sound label, a unique coming together of JA and UK talent. When Eskimo moved to London in the mid-1970s he originally played in the bands The Dove Rocks and The Freedom Fighters, providing backing to many touring Jamaican stars of the period, before meeting Adrian Sherwood and becoming a key part of his rotating cast of singers and players.
On the song itself, the band tackle the realities of the prison system, in classic reggae fashion wielding socially conscious lyrics to a dancefloor friendly heavy skanking rhythm. The lyrical theme is in keeping with the new album’s political outlook: Hostile Environment refers to former British Prime Minister Theresa May’s controversial policy towards asylum seekers, and the recent Windrush scandal, all too relevant to a group of musicians of Jamaican origin who have spent their whole lives operating in the darkening shadow of a former colonial power with a staggeringly short memory for historic wrongs.
Adrian Sherwood’s experiments in 3D Dub continue with the release of 'On-U In Space', his first ever piece of music constructed entirely with spatial audio in mind. Fans can get a taste of what to expect ahead of Sherwood’s first ever immersive 360 live dub experience in London on September 7th at EartH Hackney.
“Here is a little taster of things to come from my new Atmos mix using never heard before samples from some of my dearest co-conspirators. You can enjoy this in stereo but if you want to hear it in full audio attack, get some compatible headphones or come to the show in September.” – Adrian Sherwood
Out now! African Head Charge - A Trip To Bolgatanga. The first new album in 12 years from master percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, and producer @onusherwood.
We're proud of this one 🩷 thanks to all the musicians, songwriters, artists, engineers, and everyone who made this album possible.
Experience the forefront of sonic technology with what is possibly the world’s first fully immersive 360 live dub event from UK cult producer and founder of the fiercely independent On-U Sound label, Adrian Sherwood.
Using the venue's L-ISA immersive sound system by L-Acoustics, Sherwood will place, move, and shapeshift sound around the venue for a psychedelic musical journey. A rare chance to see an innovative artist using pioneering spatial sonics for a more vibrant connection to dub.
Parsing together individual sounds, fragments and instruments from rare and unheard sessions from On-U luminaries such as Lee “Scratch” Perry, Tackhead, African Head Charge and other influential artists past and present, Sherwood has reconstructed a brand new set of compositions, rebuilt from the ground up, and presented through this new technology in ways never heard before.
