Coyote Hunt turns into Medical Emergency
•
This morning I went out to finish a YouTube video and it ended in disaster!
•
It started off great, I was successful with another coyote down. I went to go find the coyote and in the process my ankle got stuck in a rock. I started falling down so I threw the camera to catch myself and snapped my pride and joy the SIGMA 24-105 in half. This particular ankle I have broke previously and sprang multiple times.
After realizing the already hurt ankle severity, I had to save myself and hike out of the back country which was over a mile. Now understand I’m carrying camera gear, a shooting tripod, a coyote call and a rifle, some of which is on a backpack.
I sat back and accepted my fate and adrenaline kicked in. The pain level in a hiking boot was definitely 10/10. I hiked through a wash filled with boulders and badlands meanwhile thinking where did the coyote go. During the hike, I guess it’s my Conservation/Ethical sensitive side kicking in I put everything down, turned around and hiked back up the opposing ridge line, to find her. I wanted to make sure coyote or not she wasn’t suffering.
I was just praying to myself “god give me the strength” after 25-30 mins of trying to locate my downed coyote I abandoned that idea and began to hike back to where I left the gear. It’s weird when you have so much pain and adrenaline kicks in how the human spirit and mind goes into overdrive. Here I was in excruciating pain with a huge swollen ankle, hardly can walk and I forget about myself and cannot let go of the fact I had an unethical kill, because I couldn’t retrieve the downed coyote or make sure it wasn’t suffering. Now this is just a personal thing, being when I find the animal or see it go down, this is “Ethical” to me. I know not everyone feels this way, but it’s just who I am.
In conclusion Anytime you go to the backcountry tell people where you’re going, get a personal locator beacon or a Garmin in the event you don’t have cell service. I failed both today and just dug deep to get myself out & home. The terrain and temperature in the part of AZ I live in, is unforgiving and could potentially be fatal.
I just so happened to be hunting the BLM land that sits adjacent to both my Aunts & Parents home.
