For beginner and advanced drummers, I suggest one exercise. It's for facial technique.

Have you ever noticed that when performing a complex passage on the drums, you engage every single muscle in your face? It tenses up as if you've just eaten the sourest lemon in the world or something like that.

Even the most famous drummers among us experience this "facial assistance" regularly. It's almost considered a sign of intense concentration and deep immersion in the performance.

But if you, like me, think it's cool to be able to play with a smile, then here's an exercise for you.

As soon as you catch yourself biting your lower lip and your jaw is locked tight, play the same passage again, but this time try to smile. After a certain number of repetitions, you will disconnect your facial muscles from the process of playing complex rhythms. You'll literally feel it release, and you'll be able to keep your facial muscles relaxed.

It's so pleasant and great! It's definitely worth striving for. I often catch myself making "that face" and immediately do this exercise. I'm developing a new, more harmonious habit.
