When most people reflect upon World War I, the first thing that comes to mind is the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, which triggered the start of the great war. However, a key element of World War I that is not so easily remembered or even discussed is that of the Ottoman Empire and the events which took place in what today we call the Middle East. While war was being waged on the continent of Europe, war broke out in the areas of Palestine, and the territories of modern day Iraq. World War I would eventually topple the monarchies of Europe and dissolve the Ottoman Empire into what we know today as the country of Turkey. To better understand the role the Ottoman Empire played in World War I and its relationship to Europe, we must first refer to when the Ottomans rose to power and their geographical origins.
