Wild Card with Rachel Martin

My conversation with Suleika Jaouad opened up all kinds of windows for me. She made me think more deeply about how we spend the hours we are given each day.

Because of the losses she has suffered, the grief that walks alongside her, Suleika is very intentional about how she spends the hours that make up her days, that make up her life. Writing, painting and creating have saved her. She started years ago when she was in the hospital getting treated for cancer. It started as a pledge with her family to create something small and beautiful every day for 100 days. It could be as little as a doodle or a sentence but the creative act itself is a claim to live. An act of defiance against the darkness in the world, against the things we cannot control that grieve us.

I start most of my days in the dark and early hours reading or writing, just like this morning. On my couch. Coffee in hand. Journal or computer open to see what thoughts fly out. How will you express your loving defiance today? How can you claim your life through creativity? Want to join me in 100 days of making small, beautiful things? Today is my Day 1.

Thank you, Suleika, for the most wonderful conversation.
