Illegal Immigrant Deepak Kumar Arrested with $2.9 Million in Stolen Material to Build Armor Piercing Rounds.
The case centers on a commercial truck that vanished from the radar mid-shipment. It wasn't hauling anything glamorous like classic car parts or vintage engines, but something you've probably never thought twice about: tungsten oxide powder. Roughly 40,000 pounds of it, valued at $2,857,500. For context, tungsten is the stuff that makes drill bits and armor-piercing rounds tough as nails, so this wasn't cargo anyone wanted disappearing into the wind.
Authorities arrested 31-year-old Deepak Kumar in connection with the investigation, reported the Texas Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority. According to court records, Kumar was behind the wheel of the truck when it was located, and he reportedly presented three different forms of identification during questioning: a valid California commercial driver's license, a federal work authorization document that turned out to be invalid, and a New York driver's license that investigators allege was fraudulent.
That's a lot of wallet real estate for one traffic stop. Federal officials have confirmed Kumar is currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
