ARE YOU SEARCHING FOR THE REAL TEMPLE OF GOD?

It is said in the Hindu scriptures: “whatever is in the universe, the Creator is abiding here in the body.” Every living body is the temple of God. No matter whether it is a human being, animal, insect, plant, or creeper, one can feel the presence of God.

In the Maitreiyi Upanishad (2:1), there is a beautiful description of the temple: “This body is verily the temple of God, in which the Lord is present in the form of the soul. Those who worship Him with the attitude of so’ham can easily attain freedom and liberation”.

In the Bible, it is said “Don’t you know that you yourself are God’s temple and that God’s spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him, for God’s temple is sacred and you are that temple”. (1 Corinthians, 3:16-17). It is also said “For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said, ‘I will live with them and work in them, and I will be their God and they will be my people’”. (II Corinthians, 6:16)

WHY BURN INCENSE? (A Spiritual Explanation)

During temple services and pujas, and in many holy places, people burn incense sticks. What is the significance of incense sticks? They are special sticks made from plants and herbs that create a beautiful aroma when burned. Even in old times, when incense sticks were not so much in use, people used myrrh and other plant extracts, such as resin, in the fire to create holy smoke.

This holy smoke is a symbol. The unlit incense stick has some fragrance, but this smell manifests more when it comes in contact with fire. It continuously creates a flow of smoke from the stick. This smoke is not unpleasant or suffocating; rather, the smoke creates a happy sensation a soothing effect in the mind and brain. When the incense stick is not lit, its smell is less, but when it is lit with fire, it has a fragrance that spreads everywhere.

Life is like an incense stick, and the masters, divinity, or spiritual wisdom are like fire. When a person’s life is ignited with the fire of love, fire of devotion, fire of wisdom of the masters or divinity, then this incense stick ignites the inherent unmanifested aroma of life. The beauty of life is manifested multifold. We all have immense potentiality to develop and to grow, but this potentiality is unmanifested as long as it is not in contact with fire.

The fire of the incense stick is very mild, but it has a strong effect, creating such a beautiful aroma. It also removes the bad odor in the room. So whatever bad qualities we have in our lives can be displaced in the presence of good. Thus, we burn the incense stick or create holy smoke.

THE WHEEL OF TIME: Kala Chakra

In Buddhism, the wheel is a symbol of time: kala chakra, dharma chakra, yoga chakra, and so on. This wheel also symbolically represents the cerebrospinal centers of the yogis and yogic philosophy. The wheel is known as chakra.

The wheel represents movement. Vehicles have wheels and through their help we can travel farther. Let us elaborate a little more on the kala chakra, wheel of time. This wheel of time is a continuous movement in Mother Nature, as in the cyclic process of the change of seasons, and in human life the cycle of birth, growth, majority, old age and death.

The wheel speaks of continuity - the wheel of time shows a continuation, not just elimination. Birth and earth on the wheel of life are not final. There is again a continuation to the next cycle of birth and death. In the Bhagavad Gita (2:27), it say: jatasya hi dhruvo mrityub dhruwam janma mritaya cha, “It is certain that after birth, death is inevitable, and after death, birth is bound to occur.” This cycle of birth and death are an integral part of human life. Another meaning of kala is “death”. So this wheel of birth and death is also kala chakra. Everything happens in the passage of time; it moves on. When it moves, it shows that one should not cling to a particular moment of time because this does not help us to move further. To go further, to go forward, is the movement of time, kala chakra.

Another aspect of the wheel is the dharma chakra, the wheel of dharma. Dharma has many meanings: duty, nature or quality, righteousness, moral living, dedicated to God or dedicated for divinity or goodness, and that which sustains.

In our lives we have to fulfill our duty. We should fulfill our nature and go above it. We should also be righteous and have values in our lives. At the same time, breath, which holds life in the body, should not be abused or misused. Breath is going in and coming out. It is the shvasa chakra, or the cycle of breath. In every breath one should go above the play of the senses, one should go forward in the path of inner transformation, one should move further for spiritual evolution, spiritual manifestation. This is dharma chakra.

Yoga chakra means that in the human body there are seven major chakras; five chakras or wheels are in the spine and two chakras are in the brain. Through this movement of the chakras one should move upward in the direction towards the fontanel for liberation.

In tantric practice, people sit in a circle and do some practices. This is also chakra. The chakra is a circle, and circles are also complete. Buddha taught this way of life in Sarnatha in North India to selected followers and he said it is dharmachakra pravartanna. This introduction is about the wheel of virtue and morality in life. People started using this wheel as a symbol in Buddhism.

WHAT IS "Shri" ?

The Hindus use the word "Shri". Shri is both a special symbol and a sound. It also has many more connotations. It is the name of the Divine Mother Lakshmi and is also used before every name a s a token of respect, like Shri Krishna, Shriyukteshwa, and so on. Shriyukteswarji used the word "Shriyukta" before the name of everyone.

Shri has multiple meanings. Shri is used to refer to God and the Divine Mother, prakriti. Shri can be used for male and female. Shri is prosperity. Shri means divinity, so one is to be united with divinity. Shri has even more inner significance. Shri is formed from three syllables - sa, ra, and ii. Sa means "in the head", ra means "fire", and ii means "divine energy". Those who meditate inside the head, in the cave of the cranium, see the brilliance of fire; they see light, they know all other divine qualities like vibration and sound, which is ii. Ikara shakti dayakaha: ii means "manifestation of divine light, vibration and sound inside the head, which is all-pervading".

WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN MENORAH & THE SEVEN CHAKRA? (2 min reading)

Jewish people as well as Christians use the menorah, the lamp with seven candle stands. It is a beautiful symbol. Revelations in the New Testament says, "in his hands I saw seven lamp stands". This seven is a symbol. In the Mundaka Upanishad (2:1:8), it is said:

"From him come forth the seven life-breaths, the seven flames, their fuel, the seven oblations, and these seven worlds in which move the life-breaths, seven and seven dwell in the secret place of the cave (cranium)."

The Bible, Revelation (1:12), speaks about seven golden lamp stands. In many different holy scriptures, as well as in yogic practices, there are descriptions of seven flames, seven oblations, seven caves, seven planes of existence - all use seven.

These are seven chakras in the body, and seven days of the week. Prayer should not be done only for one day, not only on the day of Sabbath or Sunday, not only on Friday; it should be done every day, and the seven candles represent the seven days.

The candle burns continuously, and so prayer should go on continuously, not just for a few times in a day or at a particular time. Prayer should not lead one to inaction or laziness.

In the seven chakra, through seven types of activities, one can perceive God's presence, God's love. This is the meaning of the menorah, and both the Jewish and Christian people use the seven lamp stands. The Hindus also use sapta pradipa, seven lamps, and sometimes in one lamp there are seven flames used in their rituals. Hence, the seven flames, seven offerings, seven planes of existence, seven days, and seven types of activities all symbolize the completeness of human life.

In astrology, there are seven major planets influencing our daily lives - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. Let the light of the seven lamps show us more love and knowledge in daily life.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SATYA YUGA (= THE GOLDEN AGE)?

Sri Yukteswar Giri explained the concept of Satya Yuga in his book "The Holy Science." According to Sri Yukteswar, Satya Yuga, also known as the Golden Age, is the first and highest of the four yugas (ages) in Hindu cosmology. In Satya Yuga, virtue and righteousness prevail, and humanity experiences a heightened spiritual consciousness. During this age, individuals possess a deep understanding of their divine nature and live in harmony with the cosmic order. The inhabitants of Satya Yuga are described as inherently truthful, virtuous, and spiritually advanced.

Sri Yukteswar's interpretation aligns with the cyclical nature of the yugas, where each yuga represents a different phase in the spiritual and moral evolution of humanity. Satya Yuga is considered the most spiritually elevated phase, gradually followed by Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga, each marked by a decline in virtue and an increase in spiritual ignorance. Sri Yukteswar's teachings emphasize the cyclical nature of these ages and their impact on human consciousness, providing a framework for understanding the broader spiritual evolution of humanity over time.

HOW LONG DOES HUMAN NEEDS TO REINCARNATE?

Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), taught reincarnation based on the principles of Bhagavad Gita and Vedic scriptures. He emphasized that the soul, or the atma, is eternal and undergoes a cycle of birth and rebirth until it attains spiritual liberation ( = moksha).

According to Swami Prabhupada, the material world is a temporary place where the soul transmigrates through various bodies, driven by its desires and actions (karma). He asserted that the process of reincarnation is governed by the law of karma, where one reaps the consequences of past actions in subsequent lives.

Swami Prabhupada taught that the ultimate goal of human life is to break free from the cycle of birth and death by engaging in devotional service (bhakti) to the Supreme, particularly through chanting the holy names of God, especially the Hare Krishna mantra. Through devotion and surrender to Krishna, one can attain liberation, returning to the spiritual realm and ending the cycle of reincarnation.

Paramahansa Yogananda came to the United States in 1920 with the primary purpose of introducing the teachings of Kriya Yoga and the ancient science of yoga to the Western world. His mission was to share the universal principles of spirituality, emphasizing the practical application of yogic techniques for self-realization and inner transformation. Yogananda believed that the ancient wisdom of the East could enrich the lives of people in the West, helping them to harmonize their material and spiritual aspirations. Through his teachings and the organization he founded, the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), Yogananda aimed to inspire individuals to seek a deeper understanding of their true nature, fostering a direct personal experience of God through meditation and the practice of Kriya Yoga. His seminal work, "Autobiography of a Yogi," became a spiritual classic and played a pivotal role in introducing Eastern philosophy and meditation practices to a global audience. Yogananda's mission was to promote universal principles of love, harmony, and self-realization, transcending cultural and religious boundaries to uplift humanity as a whole.

A JOURNEY TOWARDS THE SUPER-CONSCIOUSNESS

Attaining super-consciousness through yoga involves a systematic journey of self-discovery and inner transformation. In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, this path involves several key steps.

Ethical principles (Yamas and Niyamas) guide yogis to cultivate moral virtues and self-discipline. Asana (physical postures) and Pranayama (breath control) are employed to purify the body and balance energy. These practices prepare the mind for higher states of consciousness.

Concentration (Dharana) and meditation (Dhyana) refine the mind's focus and lead to deep states of inner stillness. The yogis gradually transcends ordinary awareness, entering a state of meditation where the distinction between the meditator and the object of meditation dissolves.

At the end, the culmination is SAMADHI, the state of SUPER-CONSCIOUSNESS. Here, the yogi experiences a profound unity with the universal consciousness, transcending the limitations of the ego and ordinary perception. Samadhi is the state of bliss, profound peace, and a direct realization of one's true nature.

Consistent practice of these yogic principles, along with devotion, selfless service (Karma Yoga), and self-inquiry, paves the way for the aspirant to attain super-consciousness, unraveling the layers of the mind and connecting with the limitless expanses of the higher self and universal consciousness.

(YOGIC LESSON 101) - Ajna Chakra / Third Eye Chakra

The Ajna chakra, or the third eye chakra, is a focal point of energy located in the forehead, slightly above the space between the eyebrows. The Ajna chakra is considered the seat of intuition, insight, and higher consciousness. It is associated with perception beyond ordinary sight and is believed to govern the pituitary gland, which plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions.

Activation of the Ajna chakra is thought to enhance clarity of thought, intuitive wisdom, and spiritual insight. It is symbolized by a lotus with two petals, representing the duality of perception and the integration of opposites. The Sanskrit term "Ajna" translates to "command" or "perceive," signifying its role in overseeing the coordination between different levels of consciousness.

Balancing and opening the Ajna chakra through meditation, mindfulness, and specific yogic practices like kriya yoga foster a deeper connection with one's inner self, enhance spiritual awareness, and promote a holistic understanding of the mind-body-spirit connection. A harmonious Ajna chakra is considered essential for gaining profound insights and accessing higher states of consciousness.
