MechSounds Update – 13 Apr 25

Hey everyone, I’ve just updated the MechSounds sample pack to include my additions since December last year. I haven’t released a new track with those additions yet (getting back into the swing of things after some significant career changes – more on that another time), but I figured it was worth sharing the updated version in the meantime.

In case you haven’t explored the MechSounds pack yet, I synthesized all samples myself using Open Source tools as it means that I’ve been able to include the project files for those samples too. If you hear something you really like, you can download the software for free and study exactly how it was made. Enjoy!

I am going to start organizing regular small picnics in my own circles, and I invite you to do the same. Now is an important time to cultivate resilient communities, and it doesn't have to be hard!

Just share a photo from your picnic to your preferred socials, tag #smallpicnicnetwork, and we'll keep reminding each other :)

minimal_worlds_ii is now completed, and the full album can be downloaded via johnoestmannmusic.com/albums!

Along with the first minimal_worlds, this is a world of Game Boy music ready to be explored. As always, all tracks are Public Domain + project files are available from the individual track pages on my website.

So I was researching for an AI synth idea: text-to-preset, as you can then change the parameters and use it as a great learning tool.

Then I realized that existing synths, which already have plenty of presets and a robust search, pretty much have the same functionality - and are waaay more efficient.

The most essential skill I've discovered for our future:

Always remembering to ask "can this tool/workflow be made without including AI?"

I've managed to essentially switch my entire workflow to Open-Source. Here's a page created to share the tools I use: johnoestmannmusic.com/tooling/

Politics aside, from a practical and security standpoint, the country that hosts many digital services is undergoing rapid political change. For awareness of non-US alternatives, I recommend checking out:

FYI: So, examining where the world is heading, I've decided that one of the best things I can do is upskill to develop free open-source software. I will still be making music for games, as well as my own music - just releasing a little less often.

Looking forward to making some tools for you all :)

Just want to give an important shout out to NYT's podcast "Rabbit Hole," which traces how one person became radicalized by the YouTube algorithm.

The focus of the podcast is on far-right radicalization, but it is important for people who are fall down rabbit-holes in all directions. I listened to it a couple years ago, and it was a fantastic "can't unhear" moment for me which has helped me to stay aware the effects of *any* YouTube rabbit holes on my life an day-to-day worldview - political, tech, spiritual, doomer, accelerationist, masculinity, etc, etc

No upload again this week - but that's just because there is plenty of audio work and audio dev going on behind the scenes :) Hoping to have a new track up next week!
