Real REAL talk for a moment. This episode means a great deal to me, if I can explain.
If you’ve followed my journey - I like to experiment. I like to take risks. I like to not stand still. This has lead me to the point where artists are willing to take their shoes off and play music IN MY HOME, often with no one around but me. It’s a WEIRD premise for them to turn up to, but it’s been taken more and more seriously with every episode.
Jamie xx was shot on one camera, in my small office - him jet lagged, me, nervous as all hell. Max Richter was two cameras, and he got lost and walked around my apartment block and ended up near the bins - I was MORTIFIED.
Now with Lorde, it’s four cameras, in my living room - when she could’ve done any other thing - TV interview, some massive podcast. What is not lost on me is that a decision was made that this was the right outlet for her for right now, and that spoke volumes ;) to what I’m trying to build here.
Not something commercial, not something click baity. Something real, something long form, something with more permanence than what I’m traditionally known for.
This show IS for music fans. Ella (@Lorde) took REAL TIME to prepare her selections, and I won’t lie- her selections were WAY better than mine.
I’m proud of this show, and I sincerely hope you’re proud of me. I think of how to do this right, and well, and of quality. And I think we’re close to achieving that.
Hey European subscribers! (particularly London, Hamburg, Berlin, Paris)
I'm coming to your city!!!
Introducing: Derrick Gee’s Radio Hour (mini) Europe tour!!!
A super fast run across four cities, I finally have a chance to meet you guys and present a show I’m really proud of.
The Radio Hour is a nod to how music used to be discovered - a place where music fans would gather to hear stories, discover music and bond over songs. Expect to hear my most precious songs, music industry observations and fervent/frivolous debates, all in the name of good music.
BEYOND excited. A little daunted. But if the hair’s hairing, we good.
