Since my last full Android Angel release in 2018 I’ve moved south of Prague, Czech Republic and bought a house in the Bohemian countryside. I’ve constructed a lot of IKEA furniture. I’ve built a very small recording studio and indulged in the microphone of my dreams. I’ve grown a lawn and become surprisingly attached to my petrol-powered lawn mower. I became a dad to a wonderful little boy a month before lockdown. I’ve also suffered from quite intense bouts of anxiety. I’ve lost one of my closest friends and helped to carry his coffin. I’ve consumed way too much news and instagram and not read nearly enough books. I’ve witnessed the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen - my wife becoming the kindest and most loving and patient mother to our son. I’ve been delighted to learn my little boy’s going to have a sibling this summer. I was proud to find the courage to begin therapy. I’ve turned 40.

I’ve also written and recorded a number of songs from which I’ve chosen four that make up my new Android Angel EP, ‘Know Joy’. All the experiences of the last four years have of course informed the EP in some way. ‘Know Joy’ is almost entirely about forgiveness. I’ve learned that summoning the strength to forgive ourselves and others creates space inside us. Space that can allow us to truly bask in the simple joys in life. Like mowing the lawn.

This EP is dedicated to my friend Micky Lintott who was unfailing in his support and encouragement with my songwriting. There was a moment in 2005 when it felt like he was the only person in the world who believed in it. He listened patiently and attentively to every song I wrote and gave me invaluable feedback. He did this for other songwriters in our community in Surrey, UK too.

Micky would discover new bands and artists before they became successful. We saw Bon Iver in a tiny church in London together around the release of ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’. We shared an unforgettable week of gigs and bars in New York in 2010 when I was there writing my ‘Marble Sun’ album and he was travelling through the states. I miss being very, very silly with him.

One of the last things he told me was that he always thought I should have been an actor. A few months after he died I registered with a few casting agencies. I’ve since acted in a Netflix film, an Amazon Prime TV show and two commercials. He would have been 40 yesterday and this EP is dedicated to him.

Destinee is from California and has been teaching English in South Korea for 5 years. She is planning to move to Prague to become a teacher in the Spring.
