GUESS WHO IS NOW A LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER? ✨
2021: passed the Masters Exam on the first try ✅
2023: passed the Clinical Exam on the first try ✅
To prepare for the clinical exam, I decided to do what I did to study for my Masters exam, because if it ain’t broke why fix it?
I studied for about 3 months, but the last month I studied HEAVILY.
One huge thing that helped, with both exams, was studying according to my learning style. I am a kinesthetic and visual learner. Flashcards, practice tests, pocket prep, and YouTube videos were my go to. I truly believe if you don’t study according to your learning style, you’re less likely to retain info.
✨MY STUDY MATERIALS ✨
-Dawn Apgar’s clinical study guide + practice exams (there are practice exams in the study guide, and she also has separate practice exam book. I did both exams). I read the entire study guide and created flashcards from my notes & the questions I missed in the practice exams
Hey yall! I’ve been MIA for too long over here, but I wanted to let yall know that I just created an Instagram Broadcast Channel all about Travel Social Work ✨✨✨
Hey y’all! I get a lot of the same questions, so to quickly answer them, please see a brief Q&A below:
1. I’M A NEW GRAD, DO I NEED EXPERIENCE? Absolutely. You need 1+ years of post-grad acute care experience. For one, you don’t even know if you actually ENJOY medical social work, so experience is vital. For two, you will NOT get trained on the job while traveling. Having experience is necessary so you actually know what you’re doing, and won’t put patients or your licensure at risk.
I know that the money is appealing, but please know that your contract can be canceled at any moment. If you go into the job with absolutely no post-grad experience, you are putting yourself on the chopping block. Knowing how to do the job is vital in staying employed as a traveler & being marketable.
2. I AM A SEASONED SOCIAL WORKER BUT I DON’T HAVE MEDICAL SOCIAL WORK EXPERIENCE. CAN I STILL TRAVEL? Most assignments will be in an acute care hospital setting. Sometimes I see assignments in jails, psych hospitals, and schools. However most of the roles are in acute care hospitals. It is in your best interest to have acute care experience in order to travel consistently.
3. I’M HAVING A HARD TIME GETTING POST-GRAD ACUTE CARE EXPERIENCE, WHAT CAN I DO? Get a per-diem job at a local hospital to get your foot in the door. NETWORK with medical social workers in your area. Consult a career coach to brush up on resume & interview skills. Keep applying & interviewing until you land a job.
4. DO I NEED TO BE LICENSED? It is in your best interest to at least have a LMSW. There are assignments that only require MSW, however you get the most opportunities when you are licensed. Plus, if you have a LCSW a lot of the contracts offer even higher pay
5. CAN I TRAVEL WHILE LIVING IN A VAN/CAN I GIVE UP MY APARTMENT? Please research “tax homes” and/or consult a tax professional.

TRAVEL SOCIAL WORK TIPS:
1. Know your worth & never settle for low paying contracts.
2. Always work with more than one travel agency.
3. Be open minded! The best travel contracts might be in places you’d never think twice about.
4. Keep 3+ months of savings in your account. You never know what might happen
5. Take breaks in between assignments so you don’t get burnt out.
