you can feel when something existed in front of a camera, and that feeling stays in your body longer than spectacle EVER! does
manifesting longer theatrical windows because movies deserve to be discovered slowly and become word of mouth obsessions instead of first weekend release events and forgetting about it afterwards
media literacy is in! let’s think about characters and plot lines as they are complex stories being told and asking ourselves why a scene works, why am editing choice may hurt, and why a character may make you uncomfortable
complex women are in. contradictory, unlikable, tender, cruel, allowed to take up space without being explained or redeemed.
physical media is in, handwritten film logs are in, treating movies like something you return to and not something you scroll past are in
theater etiquette BETTER be in! phones down. find a babysitter, don’t bring your children to r rated movies pls 😭 the collective experience still matters, especially !! in a streaming world
what’s out is anything that treats cinema like a product first and an art form second. ip for the sake of ip, while ignoring green lighting original stories, due to high risk, calling criticism “negativity” when it’s actually care, ai anywhere near the creative process.
movies don’t need to be perfect, they NEEEEEEED to be human 😤
proud to report that i have seen all of these films (meaning I’m actually being successful in going through my december watchlist, video on my page if you missed it)
but here’s a winter watchlist for my fellow grinches navigating the complicated holidays, and moments when it feels heavier than it’s supposed to
cozy movies, sad movies, comfort films, and winter-coded favorites for when family gatherings are a lot, small talk is unbearable, or you just need movies to do the talking.
feeling so creatively recharged this month (even though i didn’t watch everything on my watchlist, i still made progress! remember that the best part about watching movies is that you always have time to watch it eventually, learning to not beat myself over it.), between the subtropic film festival, new releases, and comfort rewatches, my brain is buzzing in the best way.
chainsaw man: reze arc genuinely altered my brain chemistry, subtropic had me scribbling notes (digitally, in my notes app) like i was in film classes again, and submarine unlocked my 2012 tumblr era
let me know what you watched this month + your favorites!for all my thoughts, you can always find my letterboxd reviews and substack breakdowns linked in bio.
