Skiing in Japan can be very dangerous business!
Skiing backcountry is not for everyone, especially not in Japan, please see this as a warning. Never go out in the backcountry alone or without any prior knowledge of the local area. Hire a guide or go out with someone who knows the backcountry.
A chinese girl was lucky to be found by us as we skied passed her on the backside of Cortina this year. She was pulled out and had suffered no injuries. She didnt speak english so we have no idea how long she had been down there. She had snowboarded on her own and gone straight into this hole.
In the backcountry of Japan there are terraintraps like this everywhere and you need to stay vigilant at all times when youre out there. Please consider going out in the backcountry a few extra times beforehand. During my latest trip, a couple of weeks back, I saw way too many skiers and snowboarders in the backcountry who shouldnt be there. Only go out there if youre 110% confident you know what youre doing and the risks involved.
Always keep the reward higher than the risk!
