October 06, 2025 Been a while since the last update, so here's a recap of the past couple weeks of railfanning.
September 24th featured a quality trio of trains on Halton sub. First up was CN M394 with 8343 leading, which was originally supposed to come around 10, but ran into some issues going up the hill. It passed Scotch Block around 1 PM with help from the power of CN L551, a cool sight to see up the Halton. I then saw its light power return west, rare to see local power that far up the Halton. I then moved to Stewarttown for CN U714, which featured a Norfolk Southern C6M duo, nice to see foreign power leading in Ontario again. Last but not least was CN A435 with 2528/2539 paired, which i also saw return on 434 at stewarttown 10 days later.
September 27/28 featured the Halton sub detours. I was able to shoot VIA 78 on Saturday, then VIA 71,98 & 70 on Sunday morning. This session also featured CN Z148 with a quality SD75I duo.
Monday September 29th started off with another foreign power leader, with BNSF 7032 leading CP 134. Later on that day, CN 9WL 2521 was leading CN M314. I had quite the successful chase catching it 3 times, first at the Zephyr searchlights at mile 45, then a sideshot at Warden Ave mile 33, and lastly at Doncaster after they crew changed at Langstaff. I stuck around the Bala sub for 313 which had EJE 669 in tow.
Wednesday Octob01 I was working up on Bolton, so I saw CP 421 after work at a Mactier sub horn zone, CP 9756N with Grey ghost 4537 in the consist.
Thursday October 02 Another quality slate of trains on the Galt/Halton. CP 238 had (and still has) CP 7053 leading south which i saw at the Progreston bridge. I skipped 2-231 and 137 to see CN U713 at Scotch Block with an ACC leading solo. Then I had to wait several hours for CP 230 having the D-Day WWII Veterans Unit CP 6644 leading, passing Streetsville just after 6 PM.
Friday October 03
Worked in Brampton on friday but still had time for a couple quick shots. First CP 134 at Meadowvale featuring CP SD70ACu 7026 leading in nice light. Later a lunchtime catch of a backlit CN Z148 with SD70I 5601 leading.
Saturday October 04 - Sunday October 05 I did a late night session with @JackW-92 , first at Stewarttown catching 5 trains A434 with 2528/2539 Q122 with IC 2715/2535 CN E271 with 8003, IC 2706 CN M382 with ACC 8307E, and then a massive 383 with gevos for power. After a nap I moved down to Mainway for CN M399, and eventually CN M396 after 3 AM with the dual NBSR units.
Monday October 06 Finally this morning I went to Georgetown for a couple quick catches. I fumbled my shot of 148, trying to get it at the Trestle but not getting there in time, and it also met with 425 there. Should have stuck with the VIA Station, which I went to for CN M397 featuring Norfolk Southern 4310 trailing.
Thanks for reading the update and stay tuned for more videos coming soon
Started off Monday morning with a trio of catches in Milton. First was CN Z148 at Mile 42 Halton with 75I 5712 & CN 2315. Then I caught a near train meet at mile 33 Galt sub, with CP 2-231 (8869W, KCS 4843 dpu) and CP 134 with 8609E & CSX 981 providing a nice pair.
I headed back down to Oakville to chase CN L554 with 4116 leading. After working the Ashgrove cement plant, I caught it switching tracks back into the Oakville yard at Chartwell. It departed Oakville yard just after 2, which i saw just west of Oakville at the sixteen mile creek bridge. I saw it was working AIM Scrap metal recycling plant near Appleby, so I caught it one last time at the Burlington east searchlights.
After 554, I went to Mainway for a couple quick catches. CN A435 passed by with an awesome trio (IC 2708W, 2305, 5788), and a massive load, meeting CN L551 with 4908/4717. Took a break for dinner, but went back out for the evening. Since I was in the area, I checked out the millen road crossing on the Grimsby sub, which is one of the few crossings that still have a mechanical bell, getting the Amtrak and a GO train there, may have to see 421/422 there before they change the bells.
Lastly I went back to mainway to see the CN P276 deliver an EXO charger until to Montreal, which met 271 in the same shot, and 149 at Tansley.
September 22, 2025 A decent amount of Galt sub action for Sunday and Monday.
Sunday was AC44 leaders galore, catching three of them in the afternoon. First was CP 2-230 with 8537E, and 8942 supporting as distributed power.
Not too long later was CP 2-231 with all autoracks, featuring CP 9729 & 8933 up front framed by the Ardent mills.
In the evening was the catch of the day with the regular CP 230. CP 8609 lead with a nice bell, and CSXT 981 supporting as distributed power. That same duo powered 135 today, with the CSX somehow leading. Unfortunately I missed out and I doubt the CSX will lead back on 134 tomorrow.
For Monday, I caught a trio of trains at the Guelph Junction area, and it was an AC44 trail fail day. I saw a CP Westbound passing the Milton area, so I chased it to mountsberg, missing CP 734 with 7436E that I didn't really care for. The Westbound was another 2-231 with all manifest this time and no autoracks. Leading is CP 8893, and for distributed power is CP 9808, with some nice old hoppers in the mix that I usually only see on CN.
I waited around for CP 238, which had 8950/8164 once again.
Lastly I got a CP 2-106 at the first line crossing, with 8926 leading, and a very clean CP 8640 trailing.
I did get one shot of 554 on the weekend with 4116 leading east. Apparently they haven't wyed the train, and if that keeps up it would be a shame not to see it lead in good light.
Been slacking with the posts from the past couple weeks since the trip out east.
Highlights from the past 2 weeks:
Visiting the Cherryood Trestle on the Belleville sub for a nice couple catches of CP H19, and CP 231 with an ACu leader.
The VIA detours returned to the Halton sub, with possibly the last appearance of budd car sets on the Subdivision.
Sunday September 14 had a great set of trains, with a CWR train and an ACC Duo at Doncaster, and then on the Mactier sub with Block Heritage 7016 leading 421 in awesome evening light.
Then on Monday, CN 9WL 2509 was leading CN Q102 in the afternoon, which i was able to catch at a Bala sub horn zone, that video will be out Saturday.
Tuesday I caught a bunch of CP trains around Guelph Junction, with CP 9777 leading 135 as the highlight, and CP SD60M 6259 returning to Toronto on 134. Wednesday I only saw the one train, with a quick catch of CN Z149 with CP 8001 trailing.
On GO Transit, refurbished old cab car 246 returned to service, which I've seen a couple times on the Milton & Lakeshore west lines. Hoping it runs on a horn zone to hear it's K5LA.
CN GP9RM 4116 is on 554 at the moment, hoping to catch that as much as I can while it's around.
Sunday September 07 Heading back from Sandbanks to Mississauga, I grabbed another nice haul of 20 trains. Checking atcs when I was in belleville, I noticed CP 231 was at Brighton, meeting 118 at Spicer, and than CN M306 was at Oshawa with 2517 somewhere in the consist. I took quite the risk by deciding to go to one crossing west of Spicer at Brook road in Coburg, and boy did it pay off.
Just 5 minutes after I arrived, CN M306 came roaring down the hill with four units up front, and 2517 trailing 3rd. Another 10 minutes later, I got CP 118 with the Olympic unit CP 8876 leading!
I then moved back to CN Newtonville for the rest of the afternoon until sunset. First up was CP 231 with an awesome sounding K5LA horn and some nice rail cars in tow.
That was it for the CP action, with CN Z148 and CN E276 as the only CN freight before sunset. 276 had IC 2716 leading with a nice horn. I got CP 112 under the car lights in the dark before heading west.
I set up at Oshawa VIA Station for CN M322, but I only caught the head end power and some truck frames as they stopped to work the yard.
My final stop for the night was Pickering GO, for VIA 69 and CN Z126 which has ACC 8307 leading.
Overall it was a thrilling experience, and I hope to be back in the area for fall colour season. All the trains from Friday & Sunday will be uploaded in one video hopefully this weekend.
Tonight CP 231 has 7016 & CSX 3169. It's going to be in great lighting east of Toronto yard, unfortunately I doubt i will go for it in the dark.
I had an awesome trip to Sandbanks, and a pretty fun time railfanning on the way there and home. Overall I caught over 50 trains combined with VIA Rail, and CN/CP freight trains on the Kingston and Belleville subs.
Friday September 05 First stop was Cobbledick road outside of Newcastle, with the famous searchlight signals bridge. There I saw CN Z126 with 5767E, and CN Z149 with 3418W and a terrible horn. Also a nice light shot of 902 leading VIA 40.
With an Eastbound coming on the Belleville, I moved to CN Newtonville at East Town line road. CP 132 rolled by not too long later, and so did CN M306 with a dimensional load in the mix. VIA 901 was also a nice catch by the searchlights leading VIA 45.
With both subs lying dormant between 2 and 3 PM, I took the opportunity to go to CN Grafton. There I saw CN E271, and then CN M305 with an NBSR GP in tow and an awesome k3L on CN 3383.
My last stop on the way east was just west of Trenton junction, where I caught CN G846, CP 118 with 8888E and some nice Bay line gondolas, and CN Q122. I was tempted to chase CN M369 before it crew changed in Belleville, but it made quick timing and passed by as the last train of the night just before 8 PM
September 05, 2025 Didn't catch any trains on Thursday, but I got a few nice ones for Wednesdays haul.
CN M301 at Scotch Block with two gevos & some nice hoppers.
CN A435 at Speyside with IC 2708, IC 2705 & CN 4902. Then 551 arriving at Milbase with 4136E. The 551 set has since changed to 4116/4136.
In the evening I went to halwest for CN A424 with three special units, with CN 4726, 7081 and Switcher 7304 in tow. Shortly after was CN M396 with SD75I 5731 leading, hauling by at track speed.
This weekend I'll be going to Sandbanks Provincial park for some camping. On the way Ill look to catch some trains on the Kingston and Belleville subs. So far I'll be looking out for CN Q126 with 5767 leading. As of waiting I skipped out on CP 135 and CP 331 grain train on the Galt with 7045/8655 that came out of Hamilton. Maybe I'll see that on the Belleville. Any catches that I get this week will be uploaded in one complication sometime next week.
Working in Markham for the day, however i didn't go out for any York sub trains. I caught a nice CP 134 on the way at Streetsville with ACu 7054 leading.
Then for lunch I made a rare quick trip to the CP Belleville sub at Beare. This was to catch CP 118 which left Toronto yard shortly after I arrived. It had 5 units in a 4×1×0 formation, with CP 9833 leading and a great horn at the crossing, and featuring Union Pacific SD70M 3814! That duo is expected to return west on 133 tonight.
118 met 113 at Oshawa with a T4 Gevo trio that I caught about half an hour later.
For Wednesday I plan to go out for 396 with CN 5731 leading, and perhaps 435 may have a good consist on it.
It's been a great weekend trackside! Friday started off with CP 132 at meadowvale, which had a KCS 4730 leading in nice golden light. However alot of the train and the DPU was blocked by a GO train which undershot the platform.
Later that morning, I had some time to catch the return of the Union pacific units on CN U713. 7256 led once again with a nice horn through Stewarttown. CN RTC did a great job of delaying it, making them wait nearly an hour for CN M382 to clear silver.
That was all for the day on Friday, where I went to Halwest late night to try and see CN M399. First i ended up catching CN A434 with SD75I 5651 leading. After a nap in the car, I woke up to 399 lined just before 2 AM. To my incredible luck, the Norfolk Southern Savannah & Atlanta heritage unit - NS 1065 - was trailing fourth DIT. Friday was the only night I had a chance to see 399, so I decided to chase it to Stewarttown to get a second shot, which really made my night.
I was quite busy on Saturday, only catching CP 237 with 8856/8018 for power.
Sunday morning there were two ACu leaders on the Galt sub. It was a bluebird morning without a cloud in the sky, making perfect viewing for CP 230 - 7054E, and CP 132 - 7012E, maroon and Grey heritage.
Lastly I went to Halwest Sunday evening for a quick couple catches, first CN M396 with 8308E, and then and X276 with Norfolk Southern ACe 1117 trailing second.
Ill be out of town all day Monday so no trains for me. CN 8337 is leading 148 tomorrow which should be a nice start for many on the Halton
Another couple busy days of railfanning this week. Wednesday I didn't do any railfanning on the Galt or Halton subs, instead heading out further for some quality trains.
With CN U714 passing the Halton sub before sunrise, I chased it out the York sub to catch it in nice morning light. However it was held up at McCowan for over an hour waiting for 377 and 121, passing the Beare area around 9 AM. The fourth train of the morning was CP 113 with 7021 trailing.
Later that afternoon, I planned to go to Humber to see 149's light power in case it had NS 1065, but I missed it in traffic. So to make the trip worth it I stopped at Weston for CP 112 and CP 421.
In the evening I stayed in Clarkson to catch a rare doubleheader GO train, the first in 3 years, which Metrolinx acquired special permission to run. I saw it both ways under the lights at Park Royal.
Thursday I was working in the Meadowvale area, allowing me to catch three CP trains: 529, 230 and 137. I had plans in Burlington that evening so I saw CN L551 with 4136 leading on the way. Afterwards I stuck around for a few trains: the truck frame duo CN A434 and CN L551 west, followed by CN M396 with a classic trio at Aldershot. There was an interesting grain detour with the symbol CN G846 with all CN grain hoppers. And lastly CN M383 with an interesting former Nordolk southern unit now labeled JLCX 100.

Wednesday lineup
CN M377 - 3282, 3892, 3823
CN Z121 - 2835, 3864, 3410
CN U714 - UP 7256/UP 7208
CP 113 - 7432, 7021, 8072
CP 112 - 7496, 7034 mdpu, 8530 rdpu
CP 421 - 8642, KCS 4607 mdpu
Thursday I was working in the Meadowvale area, allowing me to catch three CP trains: 529, 230 and 137. I had plans in Burlington that evening so I saw CN L551 with 4136 leading on the way. Afterwards I stuck around for a few trains: the truck frame duo CN A434 and CN L551 west, followed by CN M396 with a classic trio at Aldershot. There was an interesting grain detour with the symbol CN G846 with all CN grain hoppers. And lastly CN M383 with an interesting former Nordolk southern unit now labeled JLCX 100.
Thursday lineup
CP 529 - 8174, 8136
CP 230 - 8888, KCS 4058
CP 137 - 9721, KCS 4001
CN L551 - 4136, 4910
CN A434 - 3159, 2795
CN M396 - IC 2705, IC 2708, 5772
CN G846 - 3905, 3829, 3909
CN M383 - 3351, 2782, 2855, JLCX 100, 3084 mdpu
Friday I'll continue keeping an eye on 397 if it has NS 1065, and hopefully catching the Union Pacific duo returning on 713.
