𝔼𝕟𝕥𝕣𝕒𝕟𝕔𝕖 𝔸𝕟𝕥𝕚𝕡𝕙𝕠𝕟: The gates of heaven were opened for blessed Stephen, who was found to be first among the number of the Martyrs and therefore is crowned triumphant in heaven.

ℝ𝕖𝕗𝕝𝕖𝕔𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟: today, we witness the bloodshed by St. Stephen for professing his faith in this child. In a way, this feast day adds immediate drama to our Christmas celebration. It’s a drama that should never have happened, but one that God permitted, as St. Stephen bore the greatest witness of faith to this newborn King.

There are many reasons to include the feast of the first Christian martyr in the Church’s calendar on the second day of the Octave of Christmas. One such reason is to remind us of the consequences of giving our lives to Him who was born as an infant in Bethlehem. What are those consequences? We must give Him everything, holding nothing back, even if it means facing persecution and death.

At first glance, this might seem to take away from our Christmas joy; it could appear to dampen the festive season. However, with the eyes of faith, this feast day only enhances the glory of our Christmas celebration.

It reminds us that the birth of Christ requires everything from us. We must be ready and willing to give our lives to Him completely and without reservation. The birth of the Saviour of the World means we must reprioritise our lives, committing to choose Him above all else, even above our own lives. This means we must be prepared to sacrifice everything for Jesus, living selflessly and faithfully in accordance with His most holy will.

We often hear that “Jesus is the reason for the season.” This is true; He is the reason for life and for giving our lives wholeheartedly.

Today, reflect on the demands placed upon you by the birth of the Saviour of the World. From an earthly perspective, this “demand” may seem overwhelming. But from the perspective of faith, we recognise that His birth is an invitation to enter into new life. We are called to embrace a new life of grace and total self-giving. Allow yourself to fully embrace this Christmas celebration by seeking ways in which you are being called to give of yourself more completely. Do not fear giving everything to God and to others. It’s a sacrifice worth making and is made possible by this precious Child.

that we may imitate what we worship,
and so learn to love even our enemies,
for we celebrate the heavenly birthday
of a man who knew how to pray even for his persecutors.

God, forever and ever
