BLOODY🩸🍄 - my favorite of all the spooky mushrooms, #BleedingTooth #Hydnellumpeckii. This is a mycorrhizal species in Bankeraceae that often associates with pines, but can be found growing with other conifers as well. The young nascent nubs tend to be covered in stunning droplets of red liquid known as #guttation, which is essentially mushroom sweat (CO2 + H2O).
.
Understandably, given the appearance, people often assume this mushroom is toxic - it is not. The color comes from polyphenols produced by the mushroom. The liquid is quite bitter and will stain your hands orange. There’s nothing toxic about these mushrooms, but I don’t consider them “edible” because they are ridiculously bitter, tough, and unpalatable. Many members of Bankeraceae can be used to dye fabrics, producing a range of blueish-greys depending on pH.
.
I was so unbelievably stoked to find this incredible specimen and spent a solid hour with it documenting and just admiring how incredible it looked in the afternoon light. I hope yall find yourselves sufficiently skeeved out by this incredible #spookymushroom!
