Gardening at 58 North

Gardening at 58 North is a Youtube gardening channel which focuses on house plants and gardening. The channel contains a series of horticultural videos, some are instructional and informative, whilst others are video diaries of how my plants are doing over the year. Please have a look through my videos, if you have any questions, leave a comment and I will try to answer your questions.
My outdoor videos are filmed in North Scotland between Inverness and Elgin, the USDA of my garden is around 8 and the USDA of my parents coastal garden is around 9. However as we are only 640 miles from the arctic circle, the summers are very cool with an average daily maximum temperature of 18C (65F) in July and grass frosts are possible any month of the year. Although July and August are nearly always frost free.
If you enjoy my videos or want to keep up to date with my new videos please subscribe.

I really like the lightening in the first photo, this was taken just before 4pm as the sun was about to set. I like how the low sun lights up the topography of the landscape.
The other photos are from an old military road built in the 1700's, from this particular spot you get a view over a large mostly uninhabited area of the Cairngorm national park. The forest on the valley floor, beneath the fog is Abernethy forest, which is one of the largest ancient woodlands in the Uk and the last stronghold of the Capercaillie.
The mountains in the distance are the Cairngorms.

After the wedding at Mar lodge I had a 70 mile drive home which took me over 5 mountain passes. I had done this drive a few times before and even without snow it is one of the most beautiful drives in Scotland. However with the snow and the low winter sun it quickly became the most beautiful drive of my life.
I had to take it slowly due to the icy roads, but this was also a great excuse to enjoy the scenery. I stopped several times to take photos on the way back, but as it was -15C (5F) I made sure to keep the engine running to stop my car frosting over.
I will show photos from this drive over the next few days, the views improved as I drove west, with the snow and frost becoming deeper.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how I could make money from my photos please let me know, I have always loved photography, but have never found a way to make any money from this hobby.

Its Monday mystery macro time. What plant does this macro close up belong to?

Comment below with your guesses, I will reveal the answer next Monday.

The answer to last week's Monday mystery macro is Ensete 'Maurelii' leaf. This is a cultivated form of Ensete ventricosum which has dark bronze leaves instead of the usual green. I always grow a few of these in my garden each year as they grow so quickly and have lovely coloured leaves. I had some particularly big ones this year in my whiskey barrel planters.

No one guessed correctly this week, however a few of you guessed Canna which is closely related and this close up looks pretty much identical.

I will upload this week's Monday mystery macro later today.

Continuing with the snow theme, two years ago I stayed at mar Lodge in Braemar, Scotland for a weekend for a friend's wedding.
Deep in a valley surrounded by the cairngorm mountains the scenery was stunning. It was made all the more beautiful by the frost and snow.
One morning when I was up for an early walk it was -13c (9F) and as I walked around ice slowly encased my beard and moustache from the moisture in my breath freezing to it.

Continuing with the snowy theme, here are some more photos from my visits to Switzerland.
One year when I was visiting Oeschinensee the snow was nearly 2 meters deep, usually the local conifers shed the snow as it gets too heavy, but a few trees with dense branches held onto it creating interesting natural snow sculptors. This is the last of the snow photos from my Switzerland series. Next I will show some snowy photos from closer to home.

I was always amazed in Switzerland that you could take a quick 10 minute funicular railway trip up a mountain and go from no snow to meters of the stuff. Even walking from one valley to the next the snow depth could vary massively.
I also visited in summer so I will post some alpine plant photos at a later date.
