Art vlogs, draw with me & material review videos πΏ On a journey to become a better artist...
I'm Evelyne, freelance illustrator for fantasy games and books, and I'm posting my own art practice journey as I try to get better at anything and everything, from portraits to landscapes, charcoal to oil pastels. I also enjoy going very much in-depth in my art material reviews...
Painting mostly in acrylics and watercolors - and nowadays gouache - with the occasional digital sketch and lots of oil pastels.
I'm a Swiss artist living in South Korea, travel sketching on Jeju Island.

some cozy evenings spent sketching portraits and ideas for a new painting... https://youtu.be/Y8kVUEl0JH0?si=cmqbn... ππ
I'm not very spontaneous, even for personal paintings. π So I end up sketching composition ideas and character designs, as well as making paint mixing tests. Is all of this really necessary? Probably not, but I'm scared of just diving in!
How do you prepare for paintings? Are you generally spontaneous and just dive in when you feel inspired?

A new painting that's NEARLY finished! (the hands are a problem, I tell you.)
I've been sharing the painting process for this one, titled "Albedo", over on Patreon over the last couple weeks. It's been really refreshing to finally paint on canvas again, much rougher and simpler than the more detailed illustrations I've been working on. So, a breath of fresh air, and I got to include nods to Korean mythology, clothing and jewellery of the Baekje and Silla era, moons and galaxy patterns...! π
There'll be a "Sketchbook Session" video with all my preparations, and hopefully I'll manage to edit the painting process, as well. π

Some details that I'm really happy with in this illustration: The jar! The statue of the Satyr girl! The little plants in the background! πΏπΊ

FINALLY got this video edited! I'd collected some questions from you, and also linked to resources in the description that I hope are helpful! π₯° https://youtu.be/8ivf-cOVIug
Big disclaimer at the start of the video that I still have so much to learn, and I'm just sharing my personal experiences and tips that helped me. Let me know if you have any other questions, or maybe your experiences as an artist are completely different...! There are many different paths, after all.
Also, I found voice-over I'd recorded at my desk during the actual painting process, so I've included some of that as well to chat about colour palettes, brushes, and the anxiety of the "ugly stage" of a painting... :')
Weird to post a video on a Monday! Let's see how this goes.

A new video is coming soon! πFor now, I wanted to share some impressions from May: Quick hanbok sketches that I drew while watching an episode of My Royal Nemesis, a Zorn palette painting process, VERY cheap brushes I bought (and love), and my cat... with a painting that's been neglected and currently waits for me on the cat tree. π

Hi! β€οΈ How's May treating you? I'm collecting questions for a new video: I'll be painting a book endpaper illustration, and while I'll talk about the actual painting process for a bit, I mostly want to chat and answer any questions you might have about life as an illustrator, painting practice, and materials.
I've already collected some really interesting questions about commercial licenses, deadlines/time management for different book projects, how I got started - but the more specific the questions, the more specific and clear (hopefully!) my answers, so please ask away and I'll do my best with this little Q&A. π Happy to chat about making videos and social media stuff, too, though I'll be the first to admit that I know way less about that...

While all the statues forming the background were my favorite part of this illustration, I'm also (for once!) really happy with my blending overall! β€οΈ I was focused on creating a contrast between hard, lifeless stone and a softer human figure. Acrylics can be tricky to blend with, but there's nothing a cheap yet resilient bristle brush and some acrylic medium (I like the Retarder Fluid by Golden, but also mix some slow-drying acrylics into my regular heavy body ones for easier blending...) can't do! π₯°
This stage was just before I painted final details, like ivy plants and cracks in the marble... and you can swipe to see the earlier paint layer, which is much more stylized and quite harsh.
Excited to share the final illustration and the painting process video! (soon!)

I'm really slow when it comes to editing videos right now BUT very productive when it comes to painting...β€οΈ This is the final interior illustration for "Fangs for Nothing", and I'm using the Zorn palette - an old favorite! Before starting, I filled a sketchbook page with color swatches, trying out alternatives for the Cadmium Red Light, but while they're interesting and I'd love to paint something in those palettes, they lean a bit too cool. (Quinacridone Red and Naphthol Red Light)
So, just the usual: Titanium White, Cad Red Light, Yellow Ochre, and Mars Black, for this warmly lit ballroom scene... Very excited to show more of the process!
