Congrats to the legend Jeff Chang on the completion of his latest literary masterpiece, Water Mirror Echo! My copy arrived yesterday, get yours at WaterMirrorEcho.net 📢🙌
I first met Dan The Automator (or just "Automator" as he was known then) at a dinner in San Francisco with the rest of the Solesides crew. I looked up to him as a local guy making what I saw as credible hip-hop, and was wowed by some of the records in his collection that I didn't know at the time. We became friends, and in October of 1992, he let me tape some of those gems in-between sessions for my "Entropy" single. #ALifetimeOfVinylCulture#Quannum#BayAreaHipHop

This song initially took shape during the making of Endtroducing, but didn't make the cut and wasn't finished until the week of the album release...just about 29 years ago this month. It finally debuted a month later as the B-side to the "Stem" single. #Endtroducing#MoWax
These tapes, which were sent to Dave "Funken" Klein throughout 1992, have been on quite a journey. They were initially offered back to me thirty years ago, a few months after Dave passed, but for whatever reason (touring, studio, etc), I was too busy to close the loop. By the time I decided to revisit the topic, the trail had gone cold. Fast forward, thanks to the diligent sleuthing and efforts of a few friends, the tapes were miraculously located and are back in my possession. It's bittersweet of course, due to Dave's untimely death, but they're treasured mementos of my relationship with him and of my time recording for his label, Hollywood BASIC.
The UNKLE track "Celestial Annihilation" was based around a Wil Malone composition called "Adagio For Strings & Beats." At my request, a few test pressings (pictured) containing his original raw arrangement were made so that I could play around with it and find other sampled elements to add. It ended up being one of the final songs to be completed for the album.
A peek from 2011 inside the open "Shadowsphere," definitely one of my most popular show concepts. When closed, the sphere was a projection surface, sort of an "eye" in front of a larger standard back screen. Projection-mapping was harder then, but the video content sold the illusion. Based on some clips I've seen, it still looks amazing 15 years later.
Was so fulfilling to stop through London and Manchester last week for some quick shows with friends...great crowds, gorgeous weather, couldn't ask for more! Image by Hollin Jones.
