Last month, I started working with a brand-new client.
He told me he was getting invitations to speak everywhere, but his talks weren’t driving business results.
So I asked him to send me his slides and his script.
When I opened the files, I saw dozens of smart ideas, quotes, and frameworks. Each one interesting. Each one valuable. But as I kept reading, I realized something:
If you asked me what his presentation was about, I’d have to say, “many, many, many good ideas.”
And that’s the problem.
Because when your audience hears everything, they remember nothing AND do nothing.
During our first coaching call, I told him, “Our job isn’t to deliver more ideas. Our job is to help the audience believe one powerful idea because belief drives behavior. If the belief is strong, the action follows.”
So we stripped the talk down to its essence.
One core belief. One clear message.
Everything that supported that belief stayed.
Everything that diluted it went away.
That’s not just a speaking principle—it’s behavioral science.
In a classic 1981 study, psychologists Nisbett, Zukier, and Lemley showed people descriptions of a student.
When they added irrelevant details like “he enjoys music and movies,” the strong evidence of intelligence and ambition lost its persuasive power. The student seemed less capable just because of extra fluff.
That’s the Dilution Effect: when you mix strong ideas with weak ones, the weak ones win.
So, in your next presentation, ask yourself:
What’s the one belief I want to build?
Then let everything else fall away.

My wife used to laugh and say, “Roberto, you and your red sneakers.”
She thought I was trying to look like an off-duty NBA player.
What she didn’t know was that my sneakers are backed by science.
In 2014, researchers Silvia Bellezza, Francesca Gino, and Anat Keinan published a study in the Journal of Consumer Research called The Red Sneakers Effect.
They found that when people intentionally break small social norms, like wearing casual clothes in a formal setting, observers often see them as more confident, competent, and powerful.
In one experiment, sales associates in luxury boutiques in Milan rated shoppers wearing gym clothes (a red sneaker moment) as wealthier and higher-status than those in designer suits, but only when they believed the person was doing it on purpose.
When it looked accidental, the opposite happened.
The signal of confidence turned into a signal of carelessness.
That’s the heart of the finding: it’s not about breaking rules, it’s about owning the choice.
That principle applies directly to leadership communication.
> When a CEO tells a personal story instead of reading slides, that’s a red sneaker moment.
> When a speaker uses humor in a serious room, that’s a red sneaker moment.
> When a leader admits a mistake to build trust, that’s a red sneaker moment.
Each of these moments breaks the norm in a way that feels intentional, human, and confident...and that’s exactly why it works.
When leaders dare to communicate differently, they don’t lose authority, they amplify it.
Each moment says:“I’m not here to impress you. I’m here to connect with you.”
So maybe my wife was right.
I do love my red sneakers.
But now I can tell her: "it’s behavioral science baby"
Intentional nonconformity signals confidence, and confidence inspires trust.

I took this picture at my gym. If you look in the back, you'll see it on the wall: No Judgments. No Limits.
Every time I see that, I think about speaking. The number one thing that stops people from putting themselves out there? Judgment. The fear of being judged.
"Am I good enough?" "What if I mess up?" "What if they don't like me?"
But what if there was no judgment? Would you communicate more? Would you express more? Would you finally share what's been inside of you all along?
When I created Influencing From the Front back in 2009, I made a commitment: our room would be built on love, not judgment. No ego. No comparison. Everyone's welcome. Don't judge others. Don't judge yourself. Just go through the process.
It's beautiful to see what happens when people embrace that. The fear disappears. The stories come alive. The ideas start to flow. You can feel the freedom in the room.
And that's where the second part comes in. Some people take speaking so far they end up changing millions of lives. Why? Because speaking has no limits.
You're one video away from reaching someone across the world. One story away from changing a life. One message away from starting a movement.
There are no limits to what can happen when you speak from your heart. You just need courage, authenticity, consistency, and a genuine desire to serve.
No Judgments. No Limits. Not just a quote on a wall. A mindset for life.

The more you rely on slides, the less they rely on you.
The more you stare at the screen, the less they see you.
The more you follow the deck, the less you follow the moment.
You can feel it, the room goes quiet, not because they’re moved… but because they’re gone.
I’m not anti-slides. I use them too.
But too many speakers have become slide readers, not message leaders.
They can’t walk into a room, look people in the eyes, and move hearts without a clicker.
Slides have a time and a place, but slides don’t move people, you do.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺
Most leaders think charisma is about charm, extroversion, or personality. That mistake is costly.
Intelligence without charisma is like having a treasure chest locked shut — the gold never sees the light of day.
And charisma without intelligence? That’s an empty drum: it makes noise but carries nothing of value. Real influence demands both.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀
A 2024 study in The Leadership Quarterly (Akstinaite, Jensen, Vlachos, Erne & Antonakis) tested over 2,000 people, 134 public leaders, and even U.S. Presidents. The results?
Charisma is a costly signal — it takes serious cognitive horsepower to deliver. Every standard deviation increase in intelligence led to a 7%–12% increase in charisma signaling.
𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳. 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘥.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗮
How does intelligence show up as charisma? Through five powerful tools:
• Metaphors that turn abstract strategy into vivid meaning.
• Stories that make numbers and values memorable.
• Contrasts that sharpen ideas and create clarity.
• Moral conviction that signals authenticity and purpose.
• Vision framing that paints ambitious but believable futures.
𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Make sure you apply the tools of charisma. For example:
• Describe a problem or solution using a metaphor.
• Build a storytelling database of examples you can pull from anytime.
• Use contrast to show your audience where they are now versus what their future could be after working with you.
Charisma isn’t fluff, it's intelligence in action. And in my experience, the leaders who consistently use these tools are the ones people trust, follow, and remember.
