Ile l’an wo, k’ato so omo l’oruko.
(We look at the state of the home before naming a child.)

In Yorùbá culture, names are never random. They carry intention, memory, and expectation. A name can reflect the story of a child’s arrival, the beliefs of the family, and the hopes spoken over their life.

Today, we visited this sacred site in Ouidah alongside Babalawo Popoola Ifagbenusola and Titilola Damilola. In Vodun tradition, the Royal Python isn't just an animal; it’s a symbol of the god Dan, representing fertility, prosperity, and the continuity of life.

Unlike the myths you might hear, these pythons are revered as protectors. In fact, they are often released at night to "hunt" and return to the temple by morning!

Did you know? The followers of the temple have specific facial markings (scarification) that represent their spiritual connection to the python.
Tell me: Would you be brave enough to hold one, or are you watching from a distance?

Can you name these Egún?

Do you know why the Lokoloko paint their bodies white and red?

The Lokoloko, also known as Elemese, are the sacred royal guards of the Ooni of Ife. More than attendants, they are entrusted with both the spiritual and physical protection of the throne. Their white and red body markings symbolize duty, power, and guardianship.

Seen during revered ceremonies like the Olojo Festival, their presence reminds us that kingship in Yorùbá land is upheld not only by authority, but by tradition and ritual.
