ACSA Confirms Industry Collaboration to Ensure Continued Jet Fuel Supply to O.R. Tambo International Airport
January 20, 2025
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed that industry stakeholders are working together to address the jet fuel supply challenges following the fire at the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF) refinery on 4 January 2025. The fire has disrupted the national production of fuel, but sufficient supply has been secured for O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) for the month of January. ACSA, along with key partners, is also taking proactive steps to mitigate potential disruptions during February.

Fuel Reserves and Consumption at ORTIA

As of now, ORTIA has 27.1 million litres of jet fuel available. The airport’s daily fuel consumption is approximately 3.6 million litres, which means the current reserves will last for about 7.6 days, extending until the week ending 2 February 2025. The airport is collaborating closely with various industry stakeholders to secure additional fuel for the remainder of February.

Working with Stakeholders to Address Supply Shortage

Given the need for 3.6 million litres per day, the industry is working to ensure the required 97.2 million litres of fuel for February. Key partners in this effort include the Fuels Industry Association of Southern Africa (FIASA), NATREF, the Central Energy Fund, the Strategic Fuel Fund, Transnet (via Transnet Pipelines and Transnet Freight Rail), the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, and other state-owned energy entities. These stakeholders are coordinating to find solutions and ensure the continued supply of jet fuel.

Contingency Measures for Airlines

In light of the situation, airlines and fuel suppliers are exploring alternative measures, such as “tankering” (refueling at other airports) to manage their fuel needs. Some airlines have raised concerns that fuel suppliers are limiting their access to sufficient fuel, prompting them to make alternative plans, including making refueling stops at other airports. Airlines are taking these precautionary measures to manage fuel reserves until there is greater certainty about the supply for February.

ACSA’s Response to the Fuel Shortage

ACSA is actively working on several solutions to address the fuel shortage and build reserves for February:

Engaging all relevant stakeholders to manage the fuel shortage caused by the NATREF fire and build fuel reserves.
Requesting that Transnet prioritize the movement of fuel stock from Durban to Gauteng once imported volumes arrive.
Encouraging the fuel industry to increase stockpiles at King Shaka International Airport, which has a larger fuel capacity relative to its daily consumption.
ACSA has assured airlines, passengers, and all stakeholders that it is taking all necessary steps to maintain normal operations at ORTIA. The company is committed to transparent and timely communication and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Connecting Flights and Passenger Considerations

ACSA advises passengers to check with their airlines for the latest updates and to allow adequate time for connecting flights. While domestic flights typically have an hour for connections, international flights require more time due to customs and immigration procedures. For a smooth connection, passengers should ensure they have sufficient time between the arrival of one flight and the departure of the next, particularly as ORTIA navigates the ongoing fuel supply challenges.

Fuel Reserves and Safety Buffer

ACSA also encourages fuel suppliers to build up reserves of additional fuel, which serves as a safety buffer in case of unexpected delays, diversions, or flight condition changes.

ACSA remains committed to ensuring the secure and uninterrupted availability of jet fuel at ORTIA, and will continue to work closely with all partners to manage and resolve the challenges created by the NATREF fire.

Minister Steenhuisen Participates in Global Bioeconomy Panel Discussion in Berlin
January 20, 2025
South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, took part in a panel discussion on the bioeconomy in agriculture during the 17th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Berlin. The session, organized by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), focused on advancing global collaboration to achieve a sustainable bioeconomy in agriculture.

As the South African G20 Presidency takes the lead in 2025, bioeconomy policies are positioned as a critical priority. The focus is on integrating economic growth, environmental protection, and social equity. Agriculture has been identified as the sector with the highest economic impact within the South African Bioeconomy Strategy, covering a value chain where bio-innovation can significantly contribute to addressing climate change challenges. Key areas include crop and livestock improvement, agroprocessing initiatives, energy crop development, biocontrol and biofertilizers, aquaculture, soil conservation, and water resource management.

Minister Steenhuisen highlighted South Africa’s leadership role in promoting bioeconomy principles as outlined in the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB). Developed under Brazil’s G20 Presidency in 2024, the GIB Principles offer guidelines for policymaking and market development. They emphasize social equity, livelihoods, sustainable prosperity, and the importance of aligning the bioeconomy with nature and climate goals. The principles advocate for science-based approaches, clear metrics, enabling trade rules, and financing frameworks to foster innovation and international cooperation.

As the G20 leader in 2025, South Africa has committed to using its Bioeconomy Strategy to drive national and regional efforts aligned with these principles. Collaboration with global partners remains a priority, with Colombia and Brazil also emphasizing bioeconomy development through their leadership of COP-16 and COP-30, respectively.

South Africa’s Bioeconomy Strategy, developed under the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation, aims to make significant contributions to the country’s GDP by 2030. This vision includes creating novel industries and enhancing food security, job creation, and quality of life while ensuring competitiveness in the industrial and agricultural sectors. The National Biodiversity Economy Strategy, led by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, is also undergoing review to integrate biodiversity-dependent sectors such as forestry, ecotourism, and marine industries, aligning with broader national objectives.

The global bioeconomy, valued at $4 trillion, holds immense growth potential, with estimates suggesting it could reach $30 trillion by 2050. South Africa’s proactive role in fostering a sustainable and inclusive bioeconomy positions the country to contribute meaningfully to this transformative sector.

The GFFA, recognized as the leading global platform addressing the future of food and agriculture, brought together policymakers, scientists, businesses, and civil society to discuss solutions for food security and sustainable agricultural practices. The event culminated in the world’s largest informal conference of agriculture ministers, underscoring the critical importance of international collaboration in achieving these goals.

Lack of Support for Gauteng Farmers Will Lead to Food Insecurity in the Province
January 20, 2025
Residents in Gauteng face an increasing risk of food insecurity due to the ongoing lack of support for farmers from the provincial government. Recent data from the agricultural sector reveals a concerning trend, with agriculture experiencing a 28.8% decline in the third quarter of 2024, contributing to a 0.7 percentage point reduction in the province’s GDP. Agriculture, a critical pillar of food security, has been severely impacted not only by drought conditions but also by the current government’s failure to plan and invest in the sector.

This decline in agriculture comes at a time when 25.3% of Gauteng households report experiencing hunger, as per the 2021 General Household Survey. Alarmingly, 19% of households with no employed members are facing severe food insecurity, exacerbated by the government’s inability to foster economic growth. This dual crisis of agricultural decline and food insecurity is not just a statistic but a daily struggle for many families who cannot afford basic groceries.

Food insecurity in Gauteng is a result of years of mismanagement, ineffective policies, and neglect by the current administration. Farmers have struggled to produce essential crops such as maize, soya beans, and wheat, driving up food inflation. The challenges of farming are further compounded by natural disasters like drought, high input costs, and the increasing cost of labor and fertilizers, which have created a difficult environment for farmers and deterred new entrants into the industry.

In light of this, the Democratic Alliance (DA) will be submitting questions to MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, to determine the measures that will be put in place to support farmers with necessary equipment and training.

A DA-led provincial government in Gauteng will work tirelessly to ensure that no family is left hungry. Through the establishment of well-managed food banks, the creation of job opportunities via agro-processing centers, and investment in farming technologies and climate-resilient crops, we will ensure that agriculture thrives, even under challenging conditions. We will also ensure that the conditional grant meant to assist farmers is used effectively to provide them with the necessary equipment and training to run successful, sustainable farms.

The DA is ready to lead Gauteng into a future where food security is a priority, farmers are empowered, and all families have the opportunity to thrive. Under DA leadership, Gauteng will restore dignity to households, reinvigorate the agricultural sector, and create a province that works for its people.

Hawks Announce Breakthrough in Matric Results Leak Investigation
January 17, 2025
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, has made significant progress in its ongoing investigation into the alleged leaking and illegal sale of the 2024 matric results online. This breakthrough marks an important step in addressing a case that has raised concerns about the security of South Africa’s education systems and the integrity of national examinations.

The investigation began when the Department of Education filed a formal complaint with Pretoria Central SAPS on Sunday, 12 January 2025, following reports that the matric results had been leaked online and were being sold illegally. The case was swiftly escalated to the Hawks, who took over the matter due to its complexity and potential impact on the credibility of the education system.

Acting on intelligence gathered during the investigation, the Hawks’ Serious Economic Offences Unit, operating under the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and Cybercrime Investigation Head Office, conducted a search-and-seizure operation earlier today, 16 January 2025. The operation was carried out at a residence in Hillcrest, a suburb north of Johannesburg, after securing the necessary warrants.

The premises, home to a 21-year-old suspect and his parents, was thoroughly searched. During the operation, investigators confiscated various electronic devices suspected to be connected to the illicit dissemination and sale of the matric results. The confiscated devices are believed to hold critical evidence, such as communications, transactions, and data that could reveal the full extent of the leak and identify any other individuals involved.

Additionally, the operation uncovered an unlicensed shotgun along with live ammunition, raising further concerns about illegal activity at the residence. The discovery led to the immediate detention of the 21-year-old suspect on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Ongoing Investigation
The Hawks emphasized that the investigation is far from over, as authorities continue to analyze the confiscated electronic devices and trace the origins and spread of the leaked results. Investigators are also working to determine whether the leak was an isolated incident or part of a broader network involved in compromising confidential information for financial gain.

The incident has reignited national discussions about the importance of safeguarding sensitive data within government systems, particularly in education. The Department of Education has pledged its full cooperation with law enforcement and reiterated its commitment to restoring public trust in the administration of examinations and the release of results.

Public Reaction and Broader Implications
The leak of matric results, which represent a critical milestone for thousands of South African learners, has drawn widespread condemnation. Education experts and civil society organizations have raised concerns about the psychological impact on affected students and the potential for distrust in the education system.

In light of these events, stakeholders have called for enhanced cybersecurity measures to prevent future breaches. The Department of Education is expected to work closely with law enforcement and cybersecurity specialists to strengthen data protection protocols and ensure that similar incidents do not occur.

Next Steps
The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in court soon on charges related to the illegal possession of a firearm. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses and more evidence is uncovered.

The Hawks have assured the public that they will pursue all leads and leave no stone unturned in bringing those responsible for this breach to justice.
