UPDATE: We’re excited to share some unexpected news following the failure of the Great Horned Owl nest at the Wildflower Center on April 19. We continued to monitor Athena’s nest after it was believed the second owlet had died and Athena had not returned. After a few hours, the owlet showed some movement.
We were able to work quickly with the Wildflower Center and Austin Wildlife Rescue, who carefully removed the owlet from the abandoned nest and moved it into rehabilitation immediately. As of April 20, the owlet is showing signs of improvement and feeding well, and we have reason to be hopeful.
We’re grateful for our friends at Austin Wildlife Rescue and our partners at the Wildflower Center for mobilizing a swift recovery effort. We will continue to post updates at www.allaboutbirds.org/cams/athenas-remaining-owlet…

ORIGINAL POST: We are sad to share that the Great Horned Owls' breeding attempt at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has failed in 2026. We’re thankful to our partners at the Wildflower Center, our volunteers, and everyone who shared this time with Athena and her owlets this season.
We hope the owls return next year with a more successful outcome.
Everyone's favorite Barred Owl cam is back for 2026! The female owl laid her first egg of the season on March 11, and we expect to see another in about 2-3 days. Check out the highlight and keep watching for what comes next!
Over the last few weeks, Athena the Great Horned Owl at the Wildflower Center owl cam has been making a few visits, keeping us on our toes throughout the early spring, wondering if she would continue to nest on the grounds. Early in the morning on March 5 our questions were answered: after calmly sitting for some time on the nest, at 1:31 AM she stood up and revealed an egg! This video shows the first daylight sighting of the egg, about 6 hours later.
In each of the past seasons she has laid two eggs and successfully fledged them. The second egg has been laid around 3 days after the first one, so keep an eye out for a potential nestmate this weekend.
For the next month or so, Athena will incubate the eggs, leaving only briefly at night to eat and exercise. Although he is rarely seen at the nest, her mate will provide her with food either delivering directly or meeting her at a nearby perch for takeout.
Looking forward to an amazing 2026 of watching owl highlights with everyone!
