π Infrared Spectrum
As a quick recap: IR (infrared) light is part of the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum with longer wavelengths than visible light.
ποΈβπ¨οΈ Invisible Imaging: Thermal Cameras & LWIR
Modern SWIR cameras (Short-Wave Infrared) can capture details inside and between materials that are invisible to the human eye or standard machine vision cameras.
On the other hand, LWIR refers to wavelengths between 6,500nmβ12,000nm. Since these wavelengths are much longer, LWIR is better understood as heat energy rather than invisible light β and this is where thermal imaging comes in. π‘οΈ
πΈ Thermal Imaging
Thermal cameras detect infrared energy and convert it into a digital image. They can sense extremely small temperature differences β as little as 0.01Β°C β and display them in grayscale or colorful palettes.
π Thermal Sensors
Unlike standard machine vision cameras, thermal sensors operate differently:
Pixel resolutions range from 256Γ192 up to 1920Γ1080 (or higher).
LWIR wavelengths are much longer, so each sensor element must be physically larger.
This results in fewer pixels compared to visible-light sensors of the same size.

What is NETD in Thermal Cameras? π€
Understanding NETD in Thermal Cameras
When looking into the technical details of a thermal camera, you may come across the term NETD, which stands for Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference. It is a key indicator of how well a thermal imaging detector can distinguish small differences in thermal radiation in the image.
NETD is usually expressed in millikelvin (mK). Itβs sometimes referred to as thermal contrast. The lower the NETD, the better the detector can resolve fine temperature differences. π₯βοΈ
Typical NETD values:
Uncooled microbolometer cameras: ~45 mK
Photon-based cryogenically cooled scientific cameras: ~18 mK
At VisionDatum, our LWIR cameras can achieve NETD as low as 35 mK π―, and our MWIR cameras reach as low as 15 mK π―, delivering high sensitivity thermal imaging across a wide range of applications.
How is NETD measured? π
To measure NETD, the camera must be aimed at a temperature-controlled blackbody. The blackbody needs to stabilize before starting the measurement.
Then, NETD is measured at a specific temperature. This is not a single-frame measurement, but rather a temporal noise measurement over time.
Figure 1 shows both:
A noisy thermal image captured when the camera observes a uniform blackbody during measurement. πΈ
The histogram of all pixel values gathered from multiple frames, showing the temporal distribution of noise at that temperature. π
The NETD value is the standard deviation (STDEV) of this histogram, converted into mK.
How does NETD impact image quality and accuracy? π§
Figure 2 shows the same scene captured by two cameras β one with NETD of 60 mK, and the other 80 mK.
In regions with low temperature differences, the image from the 80 mK camera exhibits significantly more noise. β οΈ
Even a 20 mK difference in NETD can lead to clearly visible image degradation and reduced temperature accuracy in subtle details.
What factors affect NETD? βοΈ
Several factors can influence NETD performance:
Calibration range: Thermal cameras may use different NETD values under different temperature ranges.
Object temperature: NETD should always be specified at a known object temperature (e.g. NETD @ 30β―Β°C: 60β―mK).
Ambient conditions: High ambient temperatures can increase system noise, depending on the cameraβs internal temperature stability.
F-number of lens: The f-stop (aperture) of the lens determines how much IR radiation reaches the detector. Lower f/# = better NETD.
NUC (Non-Uniformity Correction) interval: As internal temperature drifts, image noise can increase before NUC is triggered.
