A student recently came to me wanting help with Body and Soul. He had watched lots of YouTube videos, learned jazz voicings, and worked through jazz books.
But when I asked him to play a simple turnaround and a ii-V-I in the key he was playing the tune in... he couldn't.
That got me thinking:
How many of us are trying to build a house without a foundation?
Before learning another voicing, be honest with yourself:
🎹 Can you play all 12 major scales?
🎹 Can you play a ii-V-I in every key?
🎹 Can you use inversions?
🎹 Can you keep good time while doing it?
