Today in Phishtory: On Saturday December 1, 1984, Phish played their first club gig at the upstairs at Nectar’s in Burlington Vermont. Cover charge was $1. No, I was not at that show. I was 11 years old living in Warminster Pennsylvania, centering my life around another band, Duran Duran.
I had this show on cassette tape but then gifted it to a couple in South Philly on Craigslist in 2009 when I was preparing for the birth of my first child. I am so grateful it is up on Relisten! God bless the tapers! Even at 19 years old I had such respect for the tapers and let it be known when I saw a show from the taper’s section by being silent and in my own space. All 5’2” 120 pounds of me then made sure that nobody interfered with the tapers. Yup, I’m that girl.
I’m all about the gratitude. I can’t imagine my life without this band. Quite a few firsts this night, including “Fluffhead” and “Slave to The Traffic Light”.
Today in Phishtory. On Saturday August 9, 1997 Phish played one show at Alpine Valley in East Troy Wisconsin. And yes, I was at that show. My lawn ticket cost $25 plus Ticketmaster fees though I lost my stub. I walked to the train station in Fox Chase Philly, took it to 30th St. Station and got another train to the airport and then I flew from Philly to Louisville, Kentucky. Jess who I met and gave a ride from Virginia Beach through Atlanta then I drove them home “On my way back to Philly,” picked me up at the airport and took me back to her apartment in Indiana. The next day we headed up to Alpine with her brunette, curly haired friend who I think her name was Erica, I feel like she was a Jewish girl from New Jersey. The things I remember, I guess because I’m a Jewish girl from Bucks County Pennsylvania. 🤷♀️ Amber was still on tour, I left after Lakewood. It was a whole thing with my dad because my car was in his name and he wasn’t letting me take the car across the country. I was free to go wherever I wanted so that’s what I did this part of the tour sans car. If I remember correctly, we were sitting in that baking hot sun in the lot and all of a sudden I saw Amber walk by and I screamed “Yo Amber” and jumped up to hug her. We didn’t use the message boards and we didn’t have cell phones. We just kind of let the universe takeover and we literally saw each other the first day I jumped back on tour. Stacy time is divine time. I say it for a reason. My highlights: Set one off to a great start with Theme. PYITE and the “Ghost” was sick especially since I called 1997 “The summer of the Ghost” cause I got it most of the shows I did. Got my third “Dogs Stole Things” and it gets better every time I get one. ALWAYS FINISH REBA PLEASE!! It’s my hook song and it was the whistle that got me. My first of three “Crossroads” which was just so good. Second set opened with “Wilson” > “Foam” which was stellar. I always forget about how huge and long this “Mike’s Groove” was! Like I think at one point I referred to it as a sandwich. There are just so many meaty layers within this second set. It’s absolutely amazing to me. Omg that “Scent of a Mule” is just superb! It’s probably my favorite Mike song, no definitely my fav. Give me the jig, yes please! Why is Slave so beautiful? This one is just glorious! Dude, when they finally played “Weekapaug Groove,” I had a hard time staying upright on that Alpine lawn cause this was my mf jam in the 90s and I used to spin. The encore for me, nothing to write home about not throwing shade used to be my perspective. But the older I have gotten the more I have fallen in love with “When the Circus Comes!” #AlpineValley#phish#tiph#onthisday#welcometomyphishylife#iwasatthatshow
Today in Phishtory: on Monday August 3rd, 1998 @phish played the second of two shows at Deer Creek in Noblesville Indiana. And yes, I was at that show. My PTBM cost $25. This was show 4 of 11 that Amber and I did together in the summer 1998 in my blue 1995 Toyota Corolla with a “Weekapauggruven” sticker on the back bumper, “Play It Leo” and “Vermont’s phinest” stickers in both rear side windows. I would love to reconnect with people I met along the way! I enjoyed camping at Deer Creek! My first time there was 1996. We were in the pavilion Mike side. My highlights: I got the only “Rhinoceros” to date at this show. And I got my first “Ride Captain Ride.” “Halley’s Comet,” “The Moma Dance,” “Strange Design,” Zero and THE WHOLE SECOND SET!!!! 🔥🙌 What a phenomenal show! The thoughtfulness of the band towards their phans is one of the reasons why I’ve stayed. They are such kind people! They played “Rhinoceros“ for a phan in attendance to honor the passing of his brother. Read more at Aug 03, 1998 Setlist - Phish.net At the time I was unaware as to why they were playing The Smashing Pumpkins but my 24 year old self thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus it really was unexpected so it was a great way to start the show. Fun fact about me: I loathe chompers but I love hearing people scream on the show recording. #phish#tiph#welcometomyphishylife#godblessthetapers#onthisday#iwasatthatshow
Today in Phishtory. On Sunday August 2nd 1998 Phish played the first of two shows at Deer Creek in Noblesville Indiana. And yes, I was at that show. My PTBM cost $28. This was show 3 of 11 that Amber and I did together in the summer 1998. We were in the lawn. In case you missed the one I did yesterday for Alpine, we drove on no sleep after quite the ordeal. Long story short we could not get out of Wisconsin and into Indiana quick enough! This was my third time at Phish Deer Creek and it just is one of the most magical places!
My highlights: I got my debut of “You Better Believe It Baby,” “Boogie On Reggae Woman,” and “Bittersweet Motel.” My second “Roggae.” Horse into Silent is one of my most coveted songs together. They just work better together for me. “Divided Sky” had an extra magic, “Ghost” and “David Bowie” had remarkable jams. “Reba” is one of my favorites since it is my hook song, that whistle! 🤌 Again, I marvel at the beauty and bliss that comes with every “Harry Hood” I am blessed to see live!
Today in Phishtory a.k.a. the time a religious cult (not the Twelve Tribes) tried to abduct me and Amber after Phish:
On Saturday, August 1, 1998 Phish played one show at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin. And yes, I was at that show. My ticket cost $25 plus Ticketmaster fees. This was show 2 of 11 for me and Amber that summer. We were in the lawn (ugh #sorrynotsorry).
The show? AMAZING. My debuts of “Ramble On,” “Fikus,” “Albuquerque,” and “Been Caught Stealing.” Highlights: Weekapaug, “Esther,” “Guyute,” BOAF, “Piper,” “Wilson” that insane “2001” → “Magilla” → “Tweezer” → “Fluffhead,” plus “Chalk Dust Torture” and “Frankenstein.”
And speaking of “Been Caught Stealing,” my first time seeing Jane’s Addiction was November 19, 1990, at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby. They only played for 45 minutes because Perry Farrell stormed off stage, and 17-year-old me walked straight into a riot after the concert.
Then came the part that has been a core memory ever since. My car died after the show and we were stuck in the muddy lot waiting for a tow truck until about 3 AM. When it finally came, our tow truck driver insisted on stopping at his church before he took us, and my ’95 Toyota Corolla to his garage.
Amber and I were like WTF, but we didn’t have cell phones, so we ended up sitting in his tow truck across the street from his church. He was persistent, trying to lure us in with food and “amenities.” We were crystal clear: we were not getting out of that truck.
After an hour or so of suspense, he finally stopped pushing and took us to his garage. He fixed my car while his wife tried to convert us with church literature. I don’t think I’ve ever left a place so fast in my life. We hit the road to Deer Creek in the early morning, exhausted, laughing, and slightly traumatized.
Between that night, the insane incline inside the venue, and the gravel at Alpine Valley… I’ve never gone back to Wisconsin.
I’m beyond grateful for not having any MAGA cult members in my family! Grateful to be on the way to my in laws for a yummy meal. #Grateful#Thanksgiving

Camp Oswego, Day Two — July 18, 1999
The hottest I have ever been — and I don’t just mean the 100+ degrees.
A total scorcher in every sense.
