JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The city of Jacksonville approved a $1.4 billion "stadium of the future" project to keep the Jaguars for at least 30 years.

City council members voted 14-1 in favor, needing 24 of 32 NFL owners' votes for final approval in October.

Each side will contribute $625 million, with Jacksonville adding $150 million for maintenance, totaling 55% of the cost.

Construction starts after the 2025 season, with the Jaguars playing in Gainesville or Orlando in 2027. The 30-year lease limits games outside Jacksonville, including one annual game in London.

The new stadium will seat 63,000, expandable to 71,500 for major events. The city will fund its share by reallocating $600 million from capital improvements and using sales tax revenue. The Jaguars will partially fund their share through the NFL's G-4 program.
