Víkingur Ólafsson
Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson has made a profound impact with his remarkable combination of highest level musicianship and visionary programmes. His recordings for Deutsche Grammophon – Philip Glass Piano Works (2017), Johann Sebastian Bach (2018), Debussy Rameau (2020), Mozart & Contemporaries (2021) and From Afar (2022) – captured the public and critical imagination and have led to career streams of over 600 million.
In October 2023, Ólafsson releases his anticipated new album on Deutsche Grammophon of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Ólafsson has dedicated his entire 2023/24 season to a Goldberg Variations world tour, performing the work across six continents throughout the year. He brings Bach’s masterpiece to major concert halls, including London’s Southbank Centre, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus, Philharmonie de Paris, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, Harpa Concert Hall, Walt Disney Hall, Sala São Paulo, Shanghai Symphony Hall and Philharmonie Berlin, to name a few.

Last season I performed The Goldberg Variations almost a hundred times all over the world. I got to know myself through that process and I got to witness the unique power of Bach’s message on people of different cultures. It was a life-changing experience for which I will always be grateful. Winning a Grammy for my album of The Goldbergs is something very special which I can’t quite put into words. I am indebted to so many people; my incredible teams at Deutsche Grammophon and HarrisonParrott, my producer Christopher Tarnow, executive producer Christian Badzura, and - most importantly - my listeners who have given so much to me with their ongoing support and open ears.

I loved recording Bach's "Das alte Jahr vergangen ist" with my wife Halla. György Kurtág made this cross-handed arrangement for himself and his wife Marta - and I highly recommend the challenge, especially for musical couples ☺️

Like so many around the world, I have been bewitched by the talent of @laufey. When she asked me to reimagine her song, ‘Bewitched,’ I didn’t have to think about it for long.
I hope you enjoy my little creation for an upright piano in the foreground (played by me) and two grand pianos placed in the distance - played so beautifully by my producer Christopher Tarnow and A&R producer Christian Badzura in a magical improv session we had in January in The Northern Lights Hall in Harpa, Iceland.
